Men's Basketball Downs St. Thomas Aquinas, 66-58

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 7, 2012) – Four Pioneer starters reached double digits in scoring for the C.W. Post Pioneers men's basketball team in a 66-58 win over St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday afternoon in East Coast Conference action.
The Pioneers improve to 9-4 and remain undefeated in ECC play with a 3-0 slate. The Spartans move to 4-8 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
C.W. Post jumped out to an early lead courtesy of a 10-2 run to begin the game, and quickly ballooned the lead to as many as 18 points as they led 28-10 with 7:24 remaining in the half. The Pioneers held a 33-22 advantage at the halftime break.
The Spartans knocked the lead down to six points as the second half got underway, and the Pioneers led 41-35 at the 12:42 mark. But C.W. Post quickly upped its lead back into the double-digit range, although the visitors pulled to within seven points on a jumper by Justin Brown with 1:41 remaining, the Pioneers sealed the victory with a layup from freshman
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) and two free throws apiece from
Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) and
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.).
Allen combined with
Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) to pace the Pioneers with 15 points apiece, as the sophomore forward also pulled down 11 boards to register his second straight double-double. Carberry chipped in with 14 points and a team-high four assists, while Williams added 13 points.
Irin Stark led STAC with 13 points, while Omar Kellman and Brown each scored 12 apiece.
The Pioneers shot 36% from the floor (22-60), and were efficient from the foul line, making 19-24 attempts. They held a 40-32 advantage on the glass, and took advantage of 15 Spartan miscues for 15 points off turnovers.
The Pioneers are on the road next, traveling to Mercy on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest.
