Men's Basketball Rolls Past St. Thomas Aquinas, 73-63

Box Score SPARKILL, N.Y. (Feb. 11, 2012) – Led by senior guard Stefan Bonneau's (Middletown, N.Y.) game-high 24 points, four Pioneers scored in double figures for the C.W. Post men's basketball team as the Pioneers bested St. Thomas Aquinas, 73-63, on Saturday afternoon at Aquinas Hall in East Coast Conference action.
 
C.W. Post improves to 17-5 and remains in sole possession of first place with an 11-1 ECC record, while St. Thomas Aquinas slips to 8-14 and 4-9 in ECC play. 
 
The Pioneers jumped out to a 9-0 lead and kept its advantage at right around 10 points for the entirety of the first half thanks to a strong start by Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.), who scored 11 of his 13 points before the break.  At halftime, the Pioneers led 34-25.
 
The visitors continued their offensive efficiency in the second half as they kept the Spartans at arms' length from start to finish.  STAC pulled to within seven points (48-41) after a five points spurt by Irin Stark, but the Pioneers reeled off seven straight to double the lead and take a 55-41 advantage with 12:46 remaining.  The Pioneers maintained their strong lead for the remainder of the contest as they lead by as many as 15 points (65-50 with 4:21 remaining) before finishing with the 10-point victory. 
 
Bonneau's 24 points came on a 9-16 night from the floor, along with three steals, while Allen checked in with 13 points and nine boards, just missing a double-double.  Junior guard Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) notched 11 points for the afternoon, while freshman Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) continued his impressive rookie season by racking up another double-double with 11 boards and 10 points on efficient 5-7 shooting.
 
Despite an even slate in rebounding, 38-38, the Pioneers garnered advantages in assist-turnover margin (14/6 and 11/16), mistake points (16-5), and points in the paint (42-30).  C.W. Post shot 41% from the floor, taking a season-high 70 shots and making 29.  They were 66% from the line and made 5-19 from  downtown. 
 
Stark, Justin Brown and Omar Kellman each scored 14 for the Spartans, who shot 43% from the floor and 87% from the line. 
 
The Pioneers return home to the Pratt Center for a Wednesday night matchup with Molloy College, beginning at 7 p.m.
