Men's and Women's Basketball Play Host to Queens On Wednesday

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 13, 2012) – Men's and women's basketball will take part in the final Wednesday doubleheader of the season this Wednesday when Queens will visit the campus, the second to last home doubleheader of the year.  The women's team, in coordination with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) Pink Zone, will promote breast cancer awareness in its contest against the Knights. 

After a loss on Saturday, the C.W. Post women's basketball team has fallen to 8-5 in the ECC with a 17-8 overall mark.  Saint Thomas Aquinas edged out the Pioneers in a 72-65 overtime decision this past Saturday as the Spartans forced 21 turnovers.  Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) totaled 10 points and 20 rebounds to help create a 49-42 rebounding edge for the Pioneers despite the loss.  Bianca Kowigos scored 14 points to lead the Spartans. 

A big contributor to the Pioneers' success this season has been the control of the backboard the team has had, behind a rebounding margin of 8.5 boards per game.  The team has also been benefitted by 3.4 blocks per game.  On the offensive end, C.W. Post has made 27.4 field goals a game to account for a 73.5 point per game average. 

Marciniak enters Wednesdays leading the team in rebounding with 10.1 per game while also being second in scoring with 10.0 points per game.  Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) is shooting an efficient 54.5 percent from the floor while Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) continues to lead the team with her 17.6 points per game.  Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) has now connected on 45 shots from beyond the arc, as she is shooting the ball from downtown with a 37.8 percentage.

Struggling for most of the season, Queens fell once again this past Saturday with a 56-42 defeat at Bridgeport.  The Knights are now 1-21 overall and have gone 0-12 in the ECC.  During the Bridgeport game, Queens gave up 31 turnovers while only forcing nine and Bridgeport came up with 15 steals.  Megan White had nine points and 12 rebounds in the loss. 

Turnovers have caused problems for the Knights for most of the season as the team is averaging 24.9 per game and are being outscored by opponents on average of 21.0 points per game.  However, the squad has been able to remain aggressive as the Knights are connected on 10.5 free throws per game. 

Nicole Caggiano is scoring at a rate of 12.6 points per game to lead the Knights.  Hitting 3.1 free throws a game, Catherine Pastor is scoring 9.9 points per game to with her team leading 6.2 rebounds a game.  Caitlin Hopkins has been efficient with her shooting, accumulating a 49.0 shooting percentage. 

The last time these two teams met was back on Jan. 18 at Queens with the Pioneers coming away with an 80-58 victory.  Behind 10 threes made as a team and have a 39-29 rebounding edge, C.W. Post controlled most of the contest.  Kopp put up 17 points with 11 rebounds while Joyner knocked down four from three-point range to accumulate 16 points.  Samantha Gillman came off the bench for Queens to total 14 points and eight rebounds. 

The Pioneers men's basketball team improved to 11-1 at top of the ECC standings with a 17-5 overall record after Saturday's 73-63 win over Saint Thomas Aquinas.  C.W. Post's defense forced 16 turnovers and generated 16 points off those turnovers and also controlled the points in paint by a 42-30 edge.  Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) led all scorers with 24 points and Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.Y.) notched a double-double behind 10 points and 11 boards. 

With an average of 6.6 three-pointers made and a 45.3 shooting percentage, the Pioneers have outscored opponents on average of 9.5 points per game.  The team's play has also been spirited by a positive 7.3 rebounding margin over other teams. 

Bonneau's 39.7 percent from long-range has led to 62 three-pointers made and has helped push 22.1 points per game, leading the team as well as the conference.  Leading the team in minutes played as he has played and started in all 22 games, Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) is second on the team with 17.7 points per game.  Continuing to a scoring and rebounding force, Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) has his scoring average up to 15.3 points per game while also pulling in 9.2 rebounds per game.  Another individual who, like Carberry, has started all 22 games, Terry Coleman (Newburgh, N.Y.) is leading with 3.8 assists a game. 

Entering Wednesday with a 3-9 conference mark and a 4-18 overall record, the Queens' men's team is coming off a loss on Saturday at Bridgeport, 85-72.  Bridgeport used a 48-34 second half to clinch the win as for the game the team shot 62.5 percent from the field.  Khalil McDonald scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. 

The Knights have kept things close in terms of statistics matched up against opponents, however are trailing in various categories.  The biggest gap is found in rebounding with a negative 7.3 rebounds per game.  One positive for the team is a 71.4 percent from the free throw line as the Knights get to the line 16.8 times a game. 

McDonald enters play with a 17.5 scoring average and also leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per game, two of the better averages in the conference.  Also averaging double-figures is Jeremiah Mordi, scoring 12.9 points a game.  He is also taking in 5.5 rebounds per game and is dishing out 3.1 assists per game. 

Back on Jan. 18, C.W. Post took an 80-64 win at Queens that was jolted by a 38-28 points in the paint advantage.  Bonneau and Allen each tallied 17 points and eight rebounds, while Williams scored 13 and pulled down 11 rebounds.  For Queens, Mordi led with 16 points and eight rebounds. 

Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. in the Pratt Recreation Center as the women's game will get underway first.  Following that contest will be the men's game at approximately 7 p.m.
