Wednesday Night Home Basketball ECC Doubheader Against Mercy

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 6, 2012) – After a compelling day at Bridgeport on Saturday, both of the Pioneer basketball teams will return to action in the Pratt Recreation Center on Wednesday for a doubleheader against Mercy. 

The women's basketball team improved to 16-7 and 7-4 in the ECC after a 77-72 overtime victory over Bridgeport on Saturday.  Catherine Lutz (Easton, Pa.) forced the overtime with three seconds remaining by knocking down a three to knot things up.  C.W. Post then went six for eight from the free throw line in the extra period to help seal the victory.  Felicia Joyner (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) went for 25 points while Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) pulled in 14 rebounds to go with six points. 

To this point in the season, the Pioneers have the same margin between scoring and rebounds over opponents of a positive 8.2 in both categories.  The teams' scoring has been helped by 15.3 assists per game while the defense has been strong.  In the backcourt, the squad has come up with 9.0 steals per game while around the rim the Pioneers have denied 3.3 shots per game. 

Leading the team in 12 of the 23 games played this season, Joyner has averaged 17.6 points per game over the course of the year.  Marciniak has been strong on the post, putting up a scoring average of 10.1 points a game while also coming down with 9.7 rebounds a game.  Lutz has led the way with 41 shots from three point range with a shooting percentage of 36.9 from distance.  On the defensive end, Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) currently leads the team with a total of 43 steals. 

The Mavericks women's basketball team of Mercy is coming off a close victory as well, defeating NYIT by a final score of 75-74 as Talia Beaulieu hit a jumper with two seconds reaming to help earn the win.  Mercy was down at 17 at halftime of the game and rallied back to win behind Beaulieu's 21 points and nine rebounds.  Jasmine Williams led the team with 22 points while also contributing seven rebounds and three steals as the Mavericks improved to 2-9 in the ECC with a 2-18 overall record.   

The Mavericks have struggled to this point, only scoring 62.2 points a game while allowing 76.0 points to opponents.  Also, Mercy has been outrebounded on average of 4.6 boards a game.  The team has been coming up with strong showings around the rim with 4.0 blocks a game.  J. Williams leads the Mavericks in scoring as the only player in double-figures with 18.0 points a game.  She is also pulling in 8.8 rebounds a game while shooting 50.7 percent a game.  Simone Williams is scoring 9.6 points a game to go with her team leading 5.8 assists per game.  Beaulieu just trails in the scoring column with 9.5 points per game with 6.9 rebounds a contest as well. 

Last time the Pioneers and Mavericks met was back on Jan. 11, as C.W. Post came away with an 86-74 win on the road.  The Pioneers used a 55-40 advantage on the boards to push the victory while Joyner scored 28 points and pulled down seven rebounds.  Marciniak led the team with 12 rebounds while on the other side, J. Williams scored 23 points and came up with four steals.

The men's basketball team will look to bounce back from the first conference loss of the season, losing to Bridgeport this past Saturday by a final score of 88-86 and falling to 9-1 in the conference with 15-5 overall mark.  Bridgeport utilized a rebounding edge of 45-36 and held the Pioneers to 30.6 percent shooting during the second half.  Four players for the Purple Knights also scored double-figures and Stefan Bonneau (Middletown, N.Y.) led the Pioneers with 31 points behind seven shots hit from beyond the arc.

Despite the loss, the Pioneers statistics are still some of the best in the conference as the team is shooting 44.9 percent to help push a scoring average of 85.0 points per game as the team has also knocked down 19.4 free throws a game.  C.W. Post is pulling in 44.0 rebounds a game, a mark that is 8.2 rebounds per game better than opponents. 

Shooting 42.8 percent from the field has helped Bonneau score a team leading 22.0 points per game.  He is also contributing 3.4 assists per game to go with his scoring.  Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) scores 17.9 points a game to help add another threat for the team's offense and also is strong on the boards as a swingman with 6.2 boards a game.  Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) leads the team in rebounding with 9.3 rebounds a game and is also chipping in 15.5 points a game.  Taking a strong position at the point guard, Terry Coleman (Newburgh, N.Y.) is currently leading the team with 3.6 assists a game and has an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.5.

Mercy's men's basketball team comes off a loss against NYIT this past Saturday, 90-79, as the team's record comes to 2-9 in the conference and 3-18 together on the season.  Turnovers hurt the Mavericks as NYIT was able to generate 33 points off of 20 Mercy turnovers.  NYIT also connected on 20 free throws during the game whereas Mercy only hit three.  Colin Senior came off the bench to score 23 points and grab eight rebounds for the Mavericks, with support from Joseph Pope as he scored 14 and notched nine rebounds.

Despite being able to outrebound opponents on average of 2.2 rebounds a game, the Mavericks have continued to be outscored as the scoring margin is at 14.7 points a game between the team and its opponents.  The Mavericks have also been plagued by turnovers over the course of the season with 19.9 per game and have only forced 13.9 a game on other teams. 

Senior has been the strongest contributor to the Maverick's offense with a team leading 14.9 points per game as he has hit 2.1 shots a game from distance.  He is also taking in 5.1 rebounds a game to help the team's total.  Pope has also been an offensive threat with 11.5 points a game and also claims the team lead in rebounds with 6.0 a game. 

Similar to the girls' teams, the men's team from each side met back on Jan. 11 with the game resulting in a 108-74 win for C.W. Post.  This was the highest scoring game on the season for the Pioneers as Vince Rosario (Perth Amboy, N.J.) knocked down seven three-pointers and tallied 25 points.  As an overall team, the Pioneers shot 58.3 percent from the field and hit 13 total threes with also eight steals on the defensive end.  Bonneau led with five steals to go along with 16 points and seven assists.  Pope led the Mavericks behind 14 points and seven rebounds. 

Action is set to begin at 5 p.m. on the Pioneers' campus with the women's set to tip things off.  The men's squad will then follow at 7 p.m. to cap off the ECC doubleheader.
