Softball Wraps Up Florida Trip With 1-1 Split Against Northwood, California (Pa.)

Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 10, 2012) – The No. 16 C.W. Post softball team closed out its 10-game Florida trip with a split against Northwood University and California (Pa.) University Saturday afternoon at the Osceola Complex. The Pioneers lost a 4-3 match in nine innings against Northwood before rallying to defeat California (Pa.), 5-3, in eight innings.
C.W. Post's record now stands at 4-6 overall. The Pioneers return to New York to host Dominican College on Thursday, March 15 at 2:30 p.m.
Against the Timberwolves, the Pioneers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the third when sophomore third baseman
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) hit a two RBI single to centerfield that scored senior right fielder
Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) and freshman left fielder
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.).
Northwood evened the score in the top of the fifth when shortstop Stacey Klonowski hit a two-run shot over the outfield fence.
With the score still tied at 2, the game moved into the eighth inning, where each team both scored a run during their respective at-bats. The Timberwolves scored on a base hit from first baseman Sam Zaborowski that scored right fielder Marisa Borkowski from second. For the Pioneers, Gonzalez recorded another RBI with a single to centerfield to score Palazzo from third.
The Timberwolves plated the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single from Lindsay Obremski.
The Pioneers had an opportunity to tie the score in the bottom of the ninth with junior first baseman
Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) standing at third. But the Timberwolves got out of the jam by picking her off and later forcing senior second baseman
Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) out at first.
Senior pitcher
Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) got the start in the circle and pitched four and two thirds innings, allowing one earned run on five hits and one walk while fanning four batters. Sophomore
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) pitched the final four and a third innings and allowed one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts.
Against California (Pa.), the Pioneers scored a run in the top of the first when Havens scored on an outfield error.
The Vulcans responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly and an infield error to lead 2-1.
C.W. Post regained the lead in the top of the seventh, beginning with an RBI single from Hopkins that scored senior center fielder
Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) from second. Junior
Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) singled to first base to score Hopkins from second for the second run.
California (Pa.) once again tied the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh on an infield error to force the game into an extra frame.
In the top half of the eighth, Gonzalez was placed at second and came home on a double to right field from sophomore shortstop
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.). Hagenah advanced to second on a passed ball and came around to score after a failed pick-off attempt.
Freshman
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) made quick work of the Vulcans with two lineouts that also eliminated the runner who led off on second.
Salcido went the distance and gave up four hits with no earned runs and no walks while striking out four batters.
