BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 17, 2012) –
C.W. Post softball played No. 22 Southern Connecticut to a split in Saturday's doubleheader, with the Pioneers winning the first, 6-2, before dropping the second, 3-0.

The Pioneers now have a record of 6-8 early in the season while Southern Connecticut's record goes to 9-1.

In the first game, sophomore pitcher Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) came around to score the game's first run on a single from junior first baseman Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.Y.) in the bottom of the second.

C.W. Post increased its lead with a Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) two-RBI single, scoring Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) and Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) to make it 3-0 after three innings.

The Pioneers then increased the lead to 6-0 during the bottom of the fourth.  Back-to-back doubles by Havens and Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.) produced runs and the scoring was concluded by a run-scoring single, produced by Gonzalez.

The Owls chipped at the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth.  Kate Hoffman drove in both on a single to left center, scoring Alyssa Downs and Brittany Bucko to cut C.W. Post's lead to 6-2.

Weber went seven strong on the mound and closed out the game for the Pioneers at 6-2 to earn her third victory of the season and improve to 3-3.  The sophomore scattered seven hits while only allowing two runs while striking out 10.  For the offense, Hagenah led with two RBI.

After three scoreless innings to begin the second game, Southern Connecticut broke through during the top of the fourth.  With Nicole Buch standing on third, Kate Hoffman shot a single down to third base to score the first run of the game and gave the Owls a 1-0 lead midway through the fourth.

Hoffman came up big for the Owls again during the top of the sixth, driving in two more runs to make the Owls' lead 3-0 in the late innings.

The run support was more than enough for Southern Connecticut starting pitcher, Jayme Larson.  Larson pitched seven innings while not allowing a run and only surrendering three hits while striking out four.

Freshman Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) allowed three runs over with four hits while striking out three and dropped to 2-2 on the season.

C.W. Post will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, March 18 for an 11 a.m. doubleheader against American International.
