Softball Salvages Split With Southern New Hampshire

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 25, 2012) – C.W. Post split a doubleheader with Southern New Hamphshire Sunday afternoon at the Softball Complex. The Pioneers rallied to win the first game, 9-8, before dropping a 1-0 loss in the nightcap.
C.W. Post improves to 14-10 overall while Southern New Hampshire improves to 10-6.
Freshman catcher
Alyson Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) drove in the winning runs with a single to left field that scored senior
Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) and freshman
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) in the bottom of the seventh.
The Penmen pushed out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first with RBI doubles from Tesia Stanasek and Cara Daly. SNHU tacked on run on in each of the second and third innings on bases-loaded walks to take a 5-0 lead.
C.W. Post made up some ground in the bottom of the third, beginning with an RBI single from sophomore shortstop Nicole
Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) followed by an RBI walk issued to senior second baseman
Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.). Senior first baseman
Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.) also had a base hit RBI that scored sophomore
Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.) from third.
SNHU added another run in the fourth when Kelsea Cheney took a 1-0 pitch and sent it over the fence in right center.
The Pioneers continued to battle and scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning as Hagenah hit a two RBI single to left field that scored Havens and sophomore third baseman
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) and cut the lead down to 6-5.
The Penmen added to their lead with two RBI singles in the top of the sixth to lead 8-5.
In the bottom of the sixth, C.W. Post put two more runs on the board with an RBI single from Dzierzynski and an RBI double from sophomore designated player

In the bottom of the seventh, junior pinch hitter
Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) reach with a single to left field and was pinch ran for by Fisher. Havens followed with a bunt single to third base. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt from senior right fielder
Krysta Palazzo (Sea Cliff, N.Y.). Hagenah reached with a walk, setting up for Dzierzynski's game-winning hit.
Senior
Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) got the win after pitching 5.2 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out seven batters. Weber, who started the game in the circle, pitched 1.1 innings and allowed three earned runs on four hits while striking out one.
Ali Maloof took the loss for SNHU after coming on in relief of starter Dolores Mattice in the third inning. Maloof allowed six earned runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. Mattice allowed three runs on five hits while string out two.
Hagenah batted 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs while Dzierzynski was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Stanasek went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored while Daly was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
In game two, both teams played through three scoreless innings before SNHU scored the only run of the game on an RBI double from shortstop Kate Stanley.
Rebecca Sherwood went the distance for the win, scattering five hits over seven innings while striking out two batters.
Freshman
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) took the loss after allowing one run on three hits with two strikeouts. Fisher led all batters with two hits.
C.W. Post returns to action on Tuesday, March 27 at Mercy College. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
