Volleyball Falls In Tough Fought Five Set Match To Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Sept. 20, 2012) – The LIU Post volleyball team dropped its second straight conference match-up with a grueling five set loss to Molloy College (22-25, 25-15, 25-17, 19-25, 9-25).
LIU Post falls to 7-6 on the season (0-2 ECC), while Molloy improves to 3-6 on the season (2-0 ECC).
The first set was the closest match of the night with ten tie scores and three lead changes. Despite recording a .364 hitting percentage (40 points higher than Molloy's .324), the Pioneers were not able to secure the win with the Lions topping LIU Post with a set score of 25-22.
Lisa Delfs (Canandaigua, N.Y.) led all players in the first set with eight kills.
The Pioneers opened the second set with a 17-6 run and never looked back taking the set 25-15. Freshman
Rachel Ringor (Honolulu, Hawaii) scooped up five digs, tying with Molloy's Stefani Koelbel for the set high.
The Pioneers won the third set handily 25-17. LIU Post opened up the set on a 16-7 run, and put the set away with a
Susy Cricchi (Borgovelino, Rieti, Italy) kill off of a
Monica Amador (Cedar Park, Texas) assist. Ringor recorded another five digs in this set along with fellow freshman
Harlee Meyers (Kailua, Hawaii). The Lions' Cassie Palmer had five of her ten kills during this third set.
The Lions were able to force a set five by taking the fourth set 25-19. Molloy took advantage of LIU Post's .033 hitting percentage to even the game at two sets apiece. Behind twelve straight Palmer serves, the Lions were able to pull ahead 12-4. The Pioneers were able to pull within four points at 16-12, but the Lions never let the lead slip away. Sam Berna and Shannon Appel each had five kills apiece for the Lions. Meyers scooped up another five digs matching her previous set dig total.
The fifth set started off as a close battle with the teams almost going point for point, but Molloy was able to pull out the win after taking the final two points off Pioneer attack errors. Appel once again led the Lions with four kills on the set.
The Pioneers' Delfs and the Lions' Berna tied to lead all players with 17 kills on the evening. Cricchi also added 14 kills for
LIU Post. Amador tossed up a game high 25 assists. Molloy's Appel and Palmer also recorded double digit kill totals.
The Pioneers return to action Friday, Sept. 21 for the NE-10/ECC Challenge and take on Merrimack College at 7 p.m.
