After A 3-0 Loss To Roberts Wesleyan, Volleyball Bounces Back Against Saint Rose With A 3-2 Victory

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 29, 2012) – The LIU Post split a pair of matches on the day, dropping the first to Roberts Wesleyan College 3-0 (20-25, 22-25, 14-25), but coming back to grab a tough fought, five-set victory over the College of Saint Rose 3-2 (15-25, 25-19, 12-25, 25-16, 15-12).
LIU Post is now 10-9 (1-3 ECC) on the season, Roberts Wesleyan improves to 6-8 (2-2 ECC), and Saint Rose falls to 8-5 (1-1 NE-10).
The first set of game one for the Pioneers featured a lot of back and forth action with each team battling to keep the score close. With the score tied at 19-19, Roberts Wesleyan closed out the set with a 6-1 run for a final score of 25-20.
Lisa Delfs (Canandaigua, N.Y.) led all players during the set with six kills and four digs.
Heather Adams (Centerville, Ohio) added four kills.
Lulu Centro (Rome, Italy) also recorded four digs for the Pioneers. The Redhawks' Gisela Ocasio led the team with four kills and four digs.
The Pioneers and Redhawks kept within three points of each other throughout the entire second set. Ten lead changes occurred, with the final tie at 18 points apiece. Roberts Wesleyan was then able to finish off the set with a 7-4 run taking advantage of four LIU Post errors over that span with a. final set score of 25-22.
Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) led with four kills on the set.
Rachel Ringor (Honolulu, Hawaii) scooped up a set-high eight digs. Three Redhawks registered three kills apiece.
The Redhawks jumped out to an 8-0 lead behind fantastic serving by Ocasio, recording three aces during that span. A few points later, Roberts Wesleyan went on a 6 point run to take a 14-4 advantage. The Pioneers would make a late push, but the Redhawks took the set 25-14, and with that the match 3-0.
Harlee Meyers (Kailua, Hawaii) led the Pioneers with four kills and four digs.
Delfs led the Pioneers with seven kills in the match. Ringor finished with 13 digs, and Centro amassed a total of 14 assists.
The Redhawks' Ocasio led all players with nine kills, Maggie Concannon led with 28 assists, and Becca Maher tallied a match-high 17 digs.
Saint Rose was ready for the Pioneers taking the first set 25-15 behind four Kelsey Lace kills and seven Katy Daniels digs.
Susy Cricchi (Borgovelino, Rieti, Italy) led the Pioneers with 3 kills, and Namahoe added four digs.
Woken up by the first set loss, the Pioneers took the second set 25-19. Delfs was wall at the net, recording one solo block and three block assists. She also led the team with three kills. Seven Pioneers registered at least one kill on the set. Meyers scooped up four digs.
The Golden Knights opened up the third set with an 8-0 run behind the serving of Ariana Wilson. She recorded four service aces over the span. Saint Rose never let the Pioneers get back into the game, taking the set 25-12. Lace led the Golden Knights with three kills, and Daniels tallied another seven digs on the set. Adams led the Pioneers with three kills.
Namahoe and Delfs each recorded three kills in the fourth set to help LIU Post to the 25-16 fourth set win. Daniels recorded three service aces for Saint Rose.
With the game coming down to the fifth set, Saint Rose jumped ahead to a 5-1 lead. The Pioneers were reluctant to lose two home games in one day and came storming back to eventually tie the set at 8-8. LIU Post finished out the set on a 7-4 with Centro setting Meyers up for the match-ending kill. Meyers finished the set with five digs, and Delfs added another three kills to her total.
The Pioneers finished the match with ten team blocks. Delfs had a hand in six of the ten and added a team-leading ten kills. Centro tallied 15 assists and 10 digs to record a double-double. Namahoe led the Pioneers with 16 digs, and Meyers added 15.
Delfs led the Pioneers on the afternoon with 17 kills, three solo blocks, and six block assists.
The Pioneers return to action Thursday, Oct. 4, hosting ECC rival Queens College at 7 p.m. in the Pratt Recreation Center.
