Ten in a Row for Men's Basketball; Pioneers Defeat UDC 84-73

Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (January 12, 2013) – The LIU Post men's basketball team earned its tenth straight victory with a 84-73 win over the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon at the Pratt Recreation Center, as senior Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn. ) scored a game-high 25 points to lead a trio of Pioneers in double figures. 

The Pioneers improve to 10-3 overall and remain unbeaten in conference action with a 5-0 record.  UDC falls to 2-11 overall and 1-4 in ECC play. 

The Pioneers took an early 6-0 lead in the contest as Carberry opened up with two threes, and quickly pushed out to a 17-7 advantage.  From there, the Pioneers slowly built their lead and led by at least 10+ points for the remainder of the half, steadily increasing until they took a 17-point advantage (46-29) into the halftime break.  Carberry and junior Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) each had 11 points at the half. 

The second half saw the Firebirds cut the lead down to seven (50-43) with 15:12 on the clock, the but the Pioneers quickly righted the ship with a 17-2 run that spanned the next five minutes and built a 22-point advantage for the home team, 67-45, with 10:11 left.  The Pioneers maintained the comfortable margin, leading by as many as 24 points, and despite some late turnovers that led to the Firebirds trimming the lead, the Pioneers earned the 11-points victory and their tenth straight win.

The Pioneers finished shooting 39% for the game (27-69) and 33% from beyond the arc (8-24), along with a 22-27 effort from the free throw line.  Carberry's 27 points came on 8-15 shooting including four three's and a perfect 5-5 from the line.  Allen finished 5-10 from the floor with 15 poitns, and both players grabbed 11 rebounds.  Senior Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.Y.) added 19 points off the bench while sophomore Charles McCann (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds. 

The hosts absolutely decimated the Firebirds on the glass, with a 61-21 advantage; and also scored 32 points in the paint, but did commit a season-high 22 turnovers.  UDC shot better from the floor (27% - 28-59) but the rebound advantage was the difference maker in the contest as the Pioneers had 22 second chance points to only 10 for UDC. 

Michael Terry was the high man for the Firebirds with 21 points in the contest. 

Next on the slate for the Pioneers is a mid-week matchup at home against Mercy College, on Wednesday, January 16 at 7:30 p.m.
