Carberry Scores 28 as Men's Basketball Wins 11th Straight, Defeats Mercy 90-71

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (January 16, 2013) – The LIU Post men's basketball team placed four scorers in double figures as the Pioneers won their 11th straight game with a 90-71 victory over Mercy College in East Coast Conference action on Wednesday evening at the Pratt Recreation Center.

The Pioneers improve to 11-3 overall and remain unbeaten in ECC action with a 6-0 slate.  The Mavericks fall to 1-13 overall and 0-6 in conference play. 

The Pioneers began the game with a 7-0 run and led 17-7 at the 16:09 mark as senior Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) hit three treys in the opening minutes.  But the Mavericks chipped away and cut the lead to five, 26-21, with 10:18 to play.  The visitors kept it close for much of the second half, pulling to within three on several occasions.  With 1:56 remaining in the half and holding a 42-39 lead, the Pioneers closed out the half with a 7-0 run to give them a ten-point lead to head into halftime up 49-39. 

The first ten minutes of the second half saw the Pioneers maintain a lead between 8-12 points over the Mavericks, but a 10-0 run beginning at the 12:24 mark kicked the lead up to 19 points and the Pioneers led comfortably for the remainder of the contest, topping out at a 24-point advantage with 3:52 before finishing with a 19-points victory.

Carberry scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Pioneers, his third straight game with 20+ points.  He also added a game-high 12 rebounds as he shot 11-13 from the floor with a career-high five three pointers.  Senior guard Billy Butler (Floral Park, N.Y.) scored 15 points and handed out six assists, and sophomore forward Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) registered a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.  Sophomore forward Charles McCann (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.)  chipped in with 12 points.

The Mavericks were led by a 21-points night for Jerrell Lawrence, along with Kirk Bailey's 12, 11 points for Chaz Morrish, and 10 points by Nate Stitchell.

The Pioneers shot well at 58.6% (34-58) and made 6-18 from long range.  They held a slight 39-38 edge on the glass and dished out 12 assists while committing 15 turnovers.  The huge advantage for the hosts was points in the paint, where they outscored the Mavericks 48-22.  Mercy shot 38% from the floor and hit 11 treys but went to the line only nine times, making six shots. 

LIU Post looks to continue its winning streak as its next three games are on the road, starting with a trip to Northern Boulevard rival New York Institute of Technology on Saturday, starting at 3 p.m.
