Men's and Women's Basketball Host ECC Rival Mercy College

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 16, 2013) - The women's and men's basketball teams will take the floor tonight against East Coast Conference rival Mercy College in the Pratt Recreation Center. Tip-offs are set for 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively.
 
The LIU Post women's basketball team will try to maintain its unbeaten mark at home and win four of its last five overall. The Pioneers have an overall mark of 10-3 that includes a 3-2 record in the ECC. Senior Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) leads the Pioneer offense with a 51.3 shooting percentage and average of 15.8 points per game this season. She has two double doubles in the last four games, including a 22-point, 14-rebound performance in the team's last game against University of District of Columbia. Senior Ashley Caggiano (Holtsville, N.Y.) leads the team in three-point shots with a 46.7 percent conversion rate from behind the arc. Senior Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) is dominating the boards, leading the team with 9.9 rebounds per game. She is second in the ECC in blocks per game, averaging 2.4 and contributing to the Pioneer total of 58 to their opponents' 35. LIU Post is shooting 29.4 percent from three-point range overall (67-228) and 38 percent (315-828)from the field.
 
Looking for first win of season is Mercy College's women's basketball team. The Mavericks fell to 0-12 after their most recent 69-49 loss against ECC opponent St. Thomas Aquinas. Their closest contest of the season came against Bridgeport, who beat them 83-73 on Jan.5. Senior Aysha Williams is Mercy's offensive catalyst, averaging team highs with 12.3 points per game and 2.5 assists per game. Sophomore Shaniqua Lewis has 35 offensive rebounds and is averaging a team best 6.7 boards per game. The Mavericks are shooting 28 percent (208-744) from the field and 20.8 percent (42-202) from behind the three point line.
 
The Pioneers men's basketball team is riding a 10-game winning streak into tonight's contest, its longest since the 2010-11 season. The team remains an undefeated 5-0 in the ECC and boasts an overall record of 10-3. Leading scorer senior Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) is averaging 19.1 points per game, including a team high 25 during a win against University of District of Columbia. Senior Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and senior Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.) follow Carberry on the team's scoring list with 15.9 and 11.3 points per game respectively. Allen also leads LIU Post in rebounding, averaging 9.5 boards per game. Senior Billy Butler (Elmont, N.Y.) is leading the ECC with 4.9 assists per game. The Pioneers are shooting 46.3 percent (364-786) from the field and 34 percent (64-188) from behind the arc to outscore opponents by a  +10.2 margin.
 
Coming off one of their closest defeats of the season, a 79-75 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas, the men's side for Mercy is trying to end a four-game skid. The Mavericks have a 1-12 overall record and are 0-5 in the ECC. Senior Joseph Pope leads Mercy with the third highest scoring total in the ECC, averaging 18.7 points per game. Junior Remi Mignott is also averaging double figures with 12.2 points per game to go along with 4.2 rebounds per game. Junior Kirk Bailey is coming off a 13-point performance and grabbing  8.2 rebounds per game. Opponents are outscoring Mercy by a +8.4 margin, as the Mavericks are shooting 40.8 percent (333-817) from the field and making 26.8 percent (66-246) of their three-point shots.
