Women's Swimming Tops Siena; 166-115

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. (Jan. 19, 2013) – Freshman Joyce Kwok's (Middle Village, N.Y.) five first place finishes led the LIU Post women's swimming team to a 166-115 win over host Siena College, winning first place in 12 of 16 events on the afternoon.
Three of Kwok's five first place finishes were individual, including the 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard butterfly, and 200-yard backstroke. She finished the 200-yard butterfly with a NCAA "B" cut time of 2:04.01 which was over 11 seconds quicker than the second place finisher in the event, Siena's Amanda York. In the 200-yard backstroke event, Kwok finished with a time of 2:07.59, just a few seconds ahead of teammate Meghan Brazier (West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) who finished the race in second place with a time of 2:11.80. Kwok's final individual first place finish came in the 100-yard butterfly in which she finished with a 'B' cut time of 56.18, edging out teammate Marthe Soerensen (Stavanger, Norway) who received second place with her time of 1:00.04 in the event.
Three other Pioneers finished with two individual wins apiece—Tamara Garriock (Duncan, British Columbia, Canada), Johanna Pettersson (Kungalv, Sweden), and Sandra Luiga (Jarfall, Sweden). Garriock took first place finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:24.95 and the 200-yard freestyle finishing the event with a 'B' cut time of 1:54.88, edging out teammate Kat Kazaba (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) who finished second with a time of 1:59.78. Pettersson's first place finishes came in the 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard freestyle. In the 100-yard backstroke, she slapped the wall a mere second ahead of teammate Seren Jones (Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom) with times of 59.11 and 1:00.24, respectively. Once again, Pettersson just barely edged out her teammate with less than one-tenth of a second to spare in the 100-yard freestyle finishing with a time of 53.56 while Soerensen registering a 53.64 mark in the event. Luiga's first place finishes came in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 400-yard individual medley in which she finished the races with times of 1:09.21 and 4:45.16, respectively.
Brazier grabbed an individual first place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 24.63. The final individual second place finish for the Pioneers came from Malin Hedberg (Vasteras, Sweden) who finished the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 5:19.14.
During the two relay events of the meet, the Pioneers were able to grab both first and second place finishes in each event. The 200-yard medley relay kicked off the meet with Jones, Garriock, Kwok, and Brazier teaming up to finish in first place with a 'B' cut time of 1:48.14, while Pettersson, Luiga, Soerensen, and Courtney Delehanty (Oceanport, N.J.) made up the second place relay squad finishing with a time of 1:50.58. The other relay event of the meet was the 200-yard freestyle relay. Brazier, Garriock, Kwok, and Pettersson compiled the squad that finished the event with a time of 1:38.61 to grab first place ahead of teammates Mairi Morrison (Carnock, Scotland), Delehanty, Soerensen, and Jones who seized second place slapping the wall for the final time after 1:41.05.
The Pioneers once again hit the road next Saturday, Jan. 26 as they face off against the University of Bridgeport in the Wheeler Recreation Center Natatorium at 1 p.m.
