Men's Basketball Falls to Bridgeport, 82-74

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (January 26, 2013) - For the second straight game, junior forward Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) surpassed his career high, this time scoring 33 points against the University of Bridgeport, but the Purple Knights dealt the Pioneers an 82-74 loss at Hubbell Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

The loss is the second in three games for the Pioneers, who move to 12-5 on the season and 7-2 in conference action.  Bridgeport goes to 12-8 overall and 8-2 in ECC play.

Bridgeport doubled up the Pioneers early in the game, taking a 20-10 lead at just over the midway mark of the half, and stretched the lead to as many as 14, leading 27-13 with 10:07 to play in the first stanza.  But the Pioneers stormed all the way back, using a 14-2 run to close out the half and cut the deficit to just one at the break a Allen's dunk with five seconds remaining in the period made it 36-35 in favor of the hosts.

But Bridgeport opened the second half with a quick 8-2 burst and were able to maintain the lead and kept the Pioneers at arms length.  The hosts slowly widened the gap and at the 13:06 mark, the Pioneers faced a 10-point, 51-41 deficit.  LIU Post battled and was able to cut the lead to just seven points (68-61) with 2:17 to play, but that would be the closest they would came as Bridgeport closed out the game.

Allen's 33 points led all players, and the forward also added a game-high 14 rebounds, who held a sizeable 43-25 advantage on the glass.  Senior guards Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.) and  Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.) added 14 and 13 points, respectively.  Sophomore forward Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) added 11 rebounds in the effort. 

For the Purple Knights, Dion Waiters' 21 points paced five players in double figures.  Darian David was right behind with a solid 16-point outing. 

The Pioneers shot 46.2% (24-52) for the contest, while UB was a bit better with a 52.5% (31-59) effort.  A season high 25 turnovers hurt the Pioneers, while Bridgeport took better care of the rock, committing only 10 miscues 

The next contest on the slate for the Pioneers is a home contest against Dowling, taking place on Wednesday, January 30 starting at 7:30 p.m.
