No. 1 Men's Soccer Rallies For 2-1 Win Against Molloy
Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2013) - Trailing 1-0 at halftime, junior forward Eivind Austboe (Stavanger, Norway) scored two late second-half goals in a 10-minute stretch to lift the top-ranked LIU Post men's soccer team past Molloy, 2-1, in an East Coast Conference clash Wednesday afternoon in Brookville, N.Y.
Molloy (4-7-2, 2-3-2 ECC) got on the board first, however, and took a 1-0 edge into the break. Off a play into the box by senior forward Tom Garcia (Westbury, N.Y.), fellow senior Dan Brown (Queens, N.Y.) used his right foot, and curved the ball inside the right post. The tally, which occurred with 1:17 elapsed, occurred off the Lions' first shot of the contest.
LIU Post (13-0, 6-0 ECC) only managed just two attempts on goal in the first 45 minutes of play, but turned it around in the latter. Only 39 seconds in, senior midfielder Jonathon Watkin (Doncaster, England) had a breakaway, but red-shirt junior goalie Justin Corke (Valley Stream, N.Y.) came out of his net to challenge, and knocked the shot aside.
The Pioneers, who outshot their opposition 5-1 in the opening 17:58 of the second half, would even things up at the 72:01 mark. Austboe found the back of the mesh on a one-on-one with Corke. Freshman forward Johann Kristjansson (Reykjavik, Iceland) was credited with the assist, after sending a through ball to the top of the box for a streaking Austboe.
Just over 10 minutes later, Austboe struck again, when he one-timed a Johannes Forgaard (Stavanger, Norway) pass from the far right wing under Corke. The goal was Austboe's 18th of the season.
Molloy had one final chance in the dwindling seconds, but Mario Gagliano's (Manhasset, N.Y.) header grazed off the top of the crossbar.
In net, senior keeper Marco Jorgensen (Copenhagen, Denmark) made four saves for LIU Post, which owned a 21-8 advantage in shots, and a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Corke had five stops.
Head Coach Andreas Lindberg and the Pioneers are back at it Saturday (Oct. 19) in an ECC tilt at St. Thomas Aquinas. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
