No. 1 Men's Soccer Cruises By STAC, 5-1
Box Score SPARKILL, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2013) - Sophomore midfielder
Matias Ruiz (Southampton, N.Y.) tallied a pair of goals Saturday, while junior forward
Eivind Austboe (Stavanger, Norway) chipped in a marker, and an assist, as the No. 1 LIU Post men's soccer squad toppled St. Thomas Aquinas, 5-1, at Spartan Field in Sparkill, N.Y.
Though each team missed on their first shot attempt, the Pioneers (14-0, 7-0 ECC) cashed in on their second try of the game. After corraling a through ball from Austboe, senior midfielder
Jonathon Watkin (Doncaster, England) surged through on a breakaway, and scored on a 12th-minute attempt, putting LIU Post ahead 1-0.
Shortly thereafter, Ruiz notched his first tally, off a feed from sophomore midfielder
Per Forgaard (Stavanger, Norway), to make it a 2-0 contest. The green and gold weren't done just yet in the half though.
With 3:47 to go before the break, Austboe collected his NCAA Division II-leading 19th marker of the year. Off a re-start, he fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the net, which sent LIU Post into the locker room sporting a three-goal cushion.
During the latter period, the hosts got on the board at the 61st minute, but the visitors would answer only 5:27 later. Ruiz accounted for the score to help secure the Pioneers' 14th-consecutive victory.
Between the pipes, senior
Marco Jorgensen (Copenhagen, Denmark) and junior
Mathias Spinnars (Ramnas, Sweden) combined for three saves. Junior netminder Nathan Mangione (Charlotte, N.C.) stopped eight shots for the Spartans (4-6-1, 2-5 ECC).
Overall, LIU Post attempted 28 shots to STAC's 12. It also owned a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.
