McCool's 17 Kills Leads Volleyball to Sweep of NYIT

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2013) - A 17-kill performance by freshman outside hitter Shelby McCool (Eugene, Ore.) led the LIU Post volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep (25-11, 25-16, 25-19) of neighboring East Coast Conference rival NYIT Tuesday evening at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y.
With the win, the Pioneers improved to 19-6 on the season, and 8-3 in ECC action. The Bears fell to 20-4 overall, with an 8-3 clip in conference play.
The Pioneers jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the first set, and later closed out the set on a run of 13-4 to clinch a 25-11 win. McCool had an outstanding nine kills in the first set, along with an attack percentage of .818 to lead the Pioneers. She also had a service ace on the final point, securing the victory.
The second set started out closely matched, with the score being tied at 4-4 and 5-5, before LIU Post pulled away for good. The green and gold followed the tie at five with a 10-3 run to bring their lead to 15-8. The Bears battled back, but with the score at 23-16, a kill by junior middle blocker Heather Adams (Centerville, Ohio), and a service ace by sophomore libero Rachel Ringor (Honolulu, Hawaii), gave the Pioneers the 25-16 second-set win.
In the third and final set, the Pioneers scored the first point, followed by two straight by the visitors. The Bears' 2-1 edge was the only time they led or had a share of the lead for the remainder of the match. LIU Post countered with a 7-1 run, and closed out the set with a 7-3 spurt, securing the 25-19 victory. The final point came off a devastating kill by McCool.
LIU Post finished the match with a hitting clip of .372, while NYIT mustered a mere .058 attack percentage. The two teams finished with similar block totals, as the Pioneers totaled seven, while the Bears registered six.
McCool was the lone attacker on either side to produce a double-digit kill total with 17. She added a .696 attack percentage, two service aces, and three block assists. Junior Lulu Centro (Rome, Italy) finished with 33 assists, and senior Makamae Namahoe (Hilo, Hawaii) scooped up a match-best eight digs.
The Pioneers return to action Thursday (Oct. 31), when they head to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. for an ECC match-up against Mercy. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
