Volleyball Loses to Bridgeport on Final Day of Regular Season

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Nov. 12, 2013) - In the final match of the 2013 regular season, the LIU Post volleyball team fell to East Coast Conference regular-season champion, Bridgeport, by a score of 3-0 Tuesday evening in Bridgeport, Conn. The set scores were 25-19, 25-13, and 25-12.

The Pioneers dipped to 22-8 overall with the loss, including an 11-5 ledger in ECC action. As for the Purple Knights, they claim the top spot in the league with an ECC record of 13-1, and an overall mark of 17-2.

The two squads began the first set neck-and-neck.  But with the home squad leading 8-7, the Purple Knights strung together six straight points to pull ahead and keep the Pioneers at an arm's length. LIU Post came within 23-19, off two straight kills from senior middle hitter Susy Cricchi (Borgovelino, Rieti, Italy) and sophomore setter Monica Amador (Cedar Park, Texas), but Bridgeport was able to knock down a kill followed by a Pioneer attack error to clinch the first set 25-19.

The green and gold did not have much going in the second and third sets, as they lost the two by a combined 25 points. 

Freshman outside hitter Shelby McCool (Eugene, Ore.) led the Pioneers with eight kills, and sophomore libero Rachel Ringor (Honolulu, Hawaii) scooped up a game-high 18 digs. Junior setter Lulu Centro (Rome, Italy) registered 15 assists in the match. Junior Heather Adams (Centerville, Ohio) finished with a block solo and a whopping five block assists for six total blocks on the night.

Sarah Rosa was the lone Purple Knight with a double-digit kill total with 10. Fernanda Silva and Biljana Savic split the setting duties, totaling 17 and 14 assists, respectively.

The Pioneers have clinched a spot in the upcoming ECC Championship, but await their seeding as other conference members are still in action for the remainder of the week.
