Softball Tabs Team Captains For 2014 Season

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 26, 2013) - On Tuesday, Head Coach Jamie Apicella (Holbrook, N.Y.) selected his team captains for the 2014 softball campaign, and three players were chosen to lead. They are Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.)Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) and Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.).

In the circle, Weber, the 2013 East Coast Conference, and Daktronics East Region Player of the Year, has compiled a 41-13 record in two years at LIU Post. alongside 351 strikeouts and a 2.65 earned-run average. At the plate, the Brightwaters, N.Y. product sports a career .352 average, including a .401 clip just last season, with 13 home runs and 62 runs batted in.

Havens has been a threat on the basepaths since she stepped onto the field with the green and gold in 2012. In a stretch of 116 contests (113 starts), the Eastport, N.Y. native owns a lifetime .339 average. Havens has also collected 126 hits and 80 runs scored, while swiping a perfect 18-of-18 bases over that span.

Lastly, Chamberlain, through 121 career games, boasts a .287 batting average with 14 RBI. In addition, she has crossed the plate on 57 occasions, and drawn 55 walks.

"This Fall, Carly, Catherine and Liz have worked extremely hard on the field, and shown their teammates that they epitomize what natural leaders are made of," Apicella said about his captains. "I feel these three young ladies understand commitment, loyalty, and are positive role models to our young players. They are driven individuals who want to excel in every aspect of their lives, and I am proud to name them captains of the 2014 team...I know their teammates feel the same way about them, and believe their leadership can guide us to another successful year."

LIU Post opens its 2014 campaign on Sunday, Mar. 2 in nearby Garden City, N.Y. at Adelphi. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
