Men's Basketball Tops Roberts Wesleyan, 78-66

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 15, 2013) - On Sunday, five different players posted double-digit scoring performances, as the LIU Post men's basketball team hung on for a 78-66 win against Roberts Wesleyan in an East Coast Conference tilt at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y.
Up 18-17 with just over nine minutes left in the first half, the Pioneers (7-3, 4-0 ECC) went on a 9-2 run in a stint of 3:24 to push their lead to 27-19 at the 5:42 mark. Junior guard
Isiah Stokley (Queens, N.Y.) drilled a trey to kick things off. Fellow junior guard
P.J. Torres (New Rochelle, N.Y.) capped things off with a three of his own.
LIU Post, which won its sixth in a row, would carry an eight-point cushion (34-26) into the intermission. Torres recorded 10 points in the stanza. Junior forward
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) had 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from field-goal range.
Holding a 38-29 advantage two-plus minutes into the second half, the hosts recorded a 16-4 burst over a near six-minute span to make it a 54-33 game with 11:41 to go. Williams and senior forward
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) accounted for the first nine points. Stokley netted the last five.
Roberts Wesleyan (5-4, 1-2 ECC) fired back furiously though, posting a 25-9 burst in a six-and-a-half minute interval to cut the deficit to 63-58 at the 4:12 mark. Sophomore guard William Bromirski (Cambridge, N.Y.) spearheaded the Redhawks' offense in the streak with 11 points. He finished the afternoon with 23 points.
Less than a minute later, the Pioneers maintained a five-point edge (66-61), until a quick 8-1 spurt sealed the victory, and re-extended the green and gold's advantage to double digits (74-62). Stokley knocked down a key trifecta in the run, while Torres hit a pair of clutch free throws.
Torres led all LIU Post scorers with 21 points. He also pulled down nine rebounds and dished out five assists. Williams collected 18 points and nine boards.
