BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 3, 2013) - On Tuesday night, five different players scored in double figures, as the LIU Post men's basketball team downed East Coast Conference foe NYIT, 94-58, at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y.
Tied 5-5 just 2:44 into the first half, the Pioneers posted a 27-5 run over a nine-minute stretch to grab a commanding 22-point lead (32-10) with 8:14 left. Sophomore guard
Dillon Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) and junior guard
P.J. Torres (New Rochelle, N.Y.) combined to knock down three triples. Junior guard
Isiah Stokley (Queens, N.Y.) had seven points down the stretch of the burst, while freshman guard
Jared Hall (South Orange, N.J.) converted a three-point play.
NYIT (2-4, 0-1 ECC) came back with a 7-0 spurt, capped by an Erick Satchell (Waldorf, Md.) trey, to close the gap to 32-17 at the 6:48 mark. The Bears would eventually slice the deficit to a 14-point margin (42-28) at the intermission, via a Jahleel Felix (Flushing, N.Y.) trifecta right before time expired.
During the latter period, LIU Post (4-3, 1-0 ECC) took over, opening up as much as a 30-point edge at the halfway juncture. A two-handed slam by senior forward
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) on the fast break gave the Pioneers their largest advantage of the night (87-48) with 6:19 to go.
For the game, the hosts shot 48.7 percent (37-of-76) from the floor, including a 44.4 percent (8-of-18) clip from beyond the arc. They also out-rebounded their opposition, 60-35, and put home 26 second-chance points to NYIT's six.
Individually, Williams anchored both squads with 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting. Allen checked in 16 points and nine rebounds. Burns accumulated 14 points, three assists, and a pair of steals.
