Women's Swimming Named 2013 Metropolitan Conference Champions

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 18, 2013) – The LIU Post women's swimming team dominated the conference championship over the weekend, coming away as the Metropolitan Champions.  The Pioneers swept the individual awards; Tamara Garriock (Duncan, British Columbia, Canada) was named Swimmer of the Meet, Joyce Kwok (Middle Village, N.Y.) was named Rookie of the Meet, and Maureen Travers was recognized as Women's Coach of the Year.

Over the course of the weekend, the Pioneers were able to set nine new school records at the conference championships.  They also set new meet and conference records in each of the five relay events. 

The Pioneers won the Metropolitan Conference Championships for the first time with a final overall score of 1298 with 15 of 18 event wins.  The College of New Jersey followed with 1021 points, Southern Connecticut State finished with 906 points in third place, and in fourth place was the University of Bridgeport with 884 points.

Garriock, the Swimmer of the Meet, won each of her three individual events, registered NCAA “B” cuts in all events, and finished as a three-time champion in the 200-yard freestyle.  Kwok also won each of her three individual events, set a pool record for Rutgers University, and registered an 'A' cut and new school and meet records in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:59.50 granting her the title of Rookie of the Meet.

LIU Post took place in five events on Sunday.  Malin Hedberg (Vasteras, Sweden) finished the 1650-yard freestyle with her personal best time of 17:37.70, good for second place.  Johanna Pettersson (Kungalv, Sweden) grabbed first place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:01.74, and Kirsty Elliott (Edinburgh, Scotland) finished the event with her personal best time of 2:10.10.  Setting a new personal best and school, conference and meet records with a time of 2:17.59, Garriock grabbed first place in the 200-yard breaststroke.  Teammates Chelcee Hew (Savage, Minn.) and Sandra Luiga (Jarfalla, Sweden) finished the same event in sixth and 10th places with times of 2:25.19 and 2:27.99, respectively.  The Pioneer 400-yard freestyle relay team of Garriock, Pettersson, Kwok, and Meghan Brazier (West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) finished in first place setting new school, conference, and meet records with its 'A' cut time of 3:24.56.

Seven Pioneers competed in the 100-yard freestyle with Brazier leading the way grabbing the first place finish with her time of 52.67.  Marthe Soerensen (Stavanger, Norway) was the second Pioneer to finish with a time of 52.85, good for third place.  Courtney Delehanty (Oceanport, N.J.) finished in fifth place with a time of 52.99.  The last Pioneer to place in the event was Mairi Morrison (Carnock, Scotland) in eighth place with a time of 53.32.  In the consolation finals, Seren Jones (Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom) finished with a personal best time of 53.05.  Katherine Kazaba (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) finished with her personal best time of 54.36, and Angelica Norrena (Solna, Sweden) registered a time of 55.18.

Next up for the Pioneers is a trip to the ECAC Championships at Harvard University March 1-3, 2013.
