Both Basketball Teams Set To Host STAC Wednesday Night

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 19, 2013) – On Wednesday night, both the men's and women's basketball teams will be hosting the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans in the Pratt Recreation Center.  Tip-offs are set for 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively.

The Pioneer women (16-7 overall, 9-6 ECC) are looking to add distance between themselves and the Spartans as the two squads have identical conference records.  Senior Nicolette Marciniak (Brooklyn, N.Y.) leads the Pioneers with 14.2 points per game, good for fifth best in the ECC.  Junior guard Alexis Peters (Dorchester, Mass.) is the other Pioneer with double figure points averaging 11.7 points per game.  Marciniak is nearly averaging a double-double with a Pioneer leading 9.5 boards per game, and senior Samantha Kopp (Franklinville, N.Y.) is right behind with 8.3 rebounds per game.  As a team, the Pioneers are shooting 39.4% (567-1440) from the field, including 31.0% (123-397) from downtown and are currently out-rebounding their opponents 1024-839 for a +8.0 margin.

The Spartan women (13-12, 9-6 ECC) are coming off a 64-43 road loss to NYIT.  Senior guard Shpresa Liharevic is the lone Spartan averaging double figures with the ECC 10th best 12.1 points per game.  Sara Oliveira is right behind with 9.1 points per game.  Freshman Alyson Brennan is the lead Spartan on the boards with 6.2 per game.  As a team, STAC is shooting 35.3% (511-1448) from the field including 29.9% (275-410) from beyond the arc.  The Spartans have been out-rebounded by their opponents 962-998 for a -1.44 margin.

On the men's side, the Pioneers (16-7, 9-2 ECC) are coming off a 102-79 road win at Mercy College Saturday afternoon.  Senior Tobin Carberry (Hamden, Conn.), the leading scorer in the conference, leads the Pioneers with 18.7 points per game.  Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and Jonathan Kohler (Bordentown, N.J.) join Carberry in double digits with 15.5 and 12.5 points per game, respectively.  Allen and Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) are the leaders on the boards pulling in 8.6 and 7.6 rebounds apiece. Senior point guard Billy Butler (Elmont, N.Y.) leads the conference with 5.0 assists per game.  As a team, the Pioneers are converting 47.6% (652-1369) of their field goal attempts, including 36.4% (130-357) of their three-point attempts.  The Pioneers have grabbed 969 rebounds to their opponents 728, good for a +10.4 margin.

The Spartan men come into the game on a two game losing streak with an overall record of 5-19 and 5-10 in conference action.  A trio of Spartans are averaging double figure point totals with Justin Brown leading the way with 17.5 points per game.  Following behind are T.J. Jones and Omar Kellman with 13.0 and 11.2 points per game, respectively.  Kellman is the leader on the glass pulling in an average of 8.4 boards per game.  As a whole, the Spartans are shooting 40.8% (561-1374) from the field including 31.2% (137-439) from three-point range.  The Spartans have been out-rebounded by their opponents by a -3.3 margin.
