No. 10 Men's Lacrosse Romps Past Saint Rose, 15-6

ALBANY, N.Y. (February 24, 2013) – Tenth-ranked LIU Post men's lacrosse got five points apiece from freshman Matty Beccaris (North Babylon, N.Y.) and Ryan Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.), and senior Justin Patterson (Corning, N.Y.) and freshman Anthony Berardis (Mahopac, N.Y.) each registered hat tricks to lead the Pioneers to a 15-6 victory over the College of Saint Rose on a chilly Sunday afternoon.

The Pioneers improve to 3-0 while the Golden Knights drop their season opener and fall to 0-1. 

The first quarter saw scoreless play by both teams for almost the first ten minutes, until Slane registered his first tally of the day at 6:05.  Kris Miller responded with the equalizer for the Golden Knights just over two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1, but the Pioneers ran off five straight goals, including two by Patterson and another by Slane, and at the 6:37 mark in the second quarter, led 6-1. 

Miller tallied another goal and Patterson ripped home his third of the game to make the score 7-2 in favor of the Pioneers at halftime.

Brett McAuliffe opened the third quarter scoring with a Golden Knights goal at 6:56 in the third, but the visitors blew the game open with two Beccaris goals sandwiched between a pair of Berardis goals, followed by Slane's third of the afternoon to give the Pioneers a commanding 12-3 lead. 

Following a Saint Rose Goal, Beccaris scored unassisted again and Slane added his final two markers of the afternoon to put the Pioneers ahead 15-4.  The Golden Knights scored two late goals in the last minute of play to close out the afternoons' offensive fireworks. 

Junior Dom Mantovani (West Babylon, N.Y.) turned in a solid effort at the X, winning 9 of 18 draws and picking up three ground balls.  Beccaris scooped up a team high 13 points, while T.J. McAndrew (Randolph, N.J.) cuased four turnovers on the afternoon.

Slane's five goals led all players, while Beccaris scored four with one helper.  Patterson and Berardis each had hat tricks with Berardis adding one assist, and both junior Octovio Bernabo (Mahopac, N.Y.) and sophomore Connor Drost (Wading River, N.Y.) each notched three helpers. 

Senior goalkeeper Tim Bradley (Wantagh, N.Y.) earned the win in goal, making seven saves as he improve to 3-0. 

Miller and McAuliffe each scored two goals for Saint Rose. 

The Pioneers outshot the Golden Knights 37-23 with both teams making eight saves and both teams turning the ball over 21 times.  The ground ball battle favored the Pioneers 65-48, and the visitors were also extremely successful on the ride, making 22-23 good clears.
