Men's Lacrosse Opens ECC Action With A 7-5 Win Over Roberts Wesleyan

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (March 16, 2013) – The LIU Post men's lacrosse team picked up its first conference win of the season by a score of 7-5 over Roberts Wesleyan College Saturday afternoon at Hickox Field.
The Pioneers improve to 4-1 on the season (1-0 ECC), while Roberts Wesleyan drops to 3-4 overall (0-1 ECC).
RWC opened up scoring with a goal by Sean Cone early in the first quarter. A goal by freshman
Anthony Berardis (Mahopac, N.Y.) off a feed from freshman
Ryan Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.) evened things up with 8:44 to play in the first. Then with 12 seconds left in the quarter, sophomore
Connor Drost (Wading River, N.Y.) scored a man-up goal with the assist from Slane to grab the 2-1 advantage.
In the second quarter, Berardis and senior
Chris Ruhlig (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) each added a goal off feeds from senior
Justin Patterson (Corning, N.Y.) giving the Pioneers a three-goal cushion.
Less than thirty seconds into the third quarter, RWC's Brett Capps scored a man-up goal, but the Pioneers answered a few minutes later at the 11:31 mark with Ruhlig's second goal and Patterson's third assist of the game. Off the ensuing face-off, RWC gained possession and Tyler Kleehammer scored cutting the lead to two. Capps cut the lead to one with his second goal of the game with 9:07 left in the third.
The Pioneers scored two quick unassisted goals in the opening minutes of the fourth with the first coming from junior
Octovio Bernabo (Mahopac, N.Y.) followed by one from freshman
Matty Beccaris (North Babylon, N.Y.). The final goal of the game was scored with 7:30 left to play by RWC's Dom Cianfarano.
LIU Post finished the game outshooting the Redhawks, 43-17. The Pioneers had a slight edge in groundball pickups, 40-35, but RWC won eight faceoffs to six wins for the Pioneers.

Adam Winne (Ridgefield, Conn.) earned his first win with seven saves in goal.
Berardis and Ruhlig led the Pioneers with two goals apiece, while Patterson finished with three assists.
The Pioneers continue East Coast Conference action Saturday, March 23 as they host NYIT for a noon matchup at Hickox Field.
