Box Score GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (March 2, 2013) – The No. 9 LIU Post men's lacrosse team put together a stellar third quarter, but a lone fourth-quarter goal by No. 7 Adelphi University was the difference maker as the Pioneers fell 8-7 to the Panthers on Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers suffer their first loss of the season as they go to 3-1, while Adelphi wins its season opener.

Adelphi took a 3-1 lead in the first quarter as freshman Matty Beccaris (North Babylon, N.Y.) scored the only goal in the period for the Pioneers.

The second quarter was a defensive battle as Adelphi managed the only goal by either team, and at halftime, the Panthers led 4-1.

But in the third quarter, the Pioneers turned it up offensively as sophomore Connor Drost (Wading River, N.Y.) notched an unassisted score at 13:24, followed by another Beccaris marker at 11:19 to make it a one-goal game.

Vinny Coiro gave the Panthers a 5-3 lead at 9:24, but Beccaris scored again at 8:39 and fellow freshman attacker Ryan Slane (North Babylon, N.Y.) ripped one home at 7:46 to tie the game up at 5-all.

Adelphi took a brief lead with a 3:41 goal by Kevin Kennedy, but Beccaris scored his third of the afternoon at 3:07 then Slane connected with Justin Patterson (Corning, N.Y.) for his first tally of the afternoon that put LIU Post ahead, 7-6, with 2:10 left in the third.

But Kennedy's second of the afternoon tied it at 7 with just 48 seconds left in the third stanza, setting the stage for Salvatore Tuttle's game winner at 10:52 in the fourth quarter.

The Pioneers held a 38-26 shot advantage, including 7-2 in the fourth quarter, but they were frustrated by a strong performance by AU goalkeeper Eric Janssen, who made 16 stops on the afternoon, including five in the crucial final period.  Adelphi won the ground ball battle, 30-26, and both teams were 2-5 on extra-man possessions.

Offensively, Beccaris scored four to lead the Pioneers.  Slane, Drost and Patterson each added a goal and an assist.  At the X, junior Dom Mantovani (West Babylon, N.Y.) was 4-11, and sophomore Dan Jeannotte (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) was 4-8.

In goal for the Pioneers, senior Tim Bradley (Wantagh, N.Y.) made nine stops.

Next up for head coach John Jez and the Pioneers is a trip up north to Bentley on Saturday, March 9, taking on the Falcons at 1 p.m.
