Corona Powers Baseball To 5-2 Win Over Post
Box Score DANBURY, CONN. (March 30, 2013) – A three-run round tripper by senior catcher
Anthony Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) in the fourth inning propelled the LIU Post baseball team to a 5-2 win over Post University Saturday afternoon.
LIU Post improves to 9-11 on the season, while Post falls to 8-11-1.
The Eagles jumped on the board with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but that was all hurlers
Rafael Martinez (Bronx, N.Y.) and
Mike Eckerle (Hewlett, N.Y.) would allow as the pair combined to shut Post out over the final eight innings.
Corona's three-run homerun got the Pioneers on the board in the fourth as he knocked in senior shortstop
Kevin Chenicek (Levittown, N.Y.) and senior third baseman
Keith Herring (New York, N.Y.) with the blast.
The Pioneers tacked on some insurance runs in the seventh. Sophomore right fielder
Joey Arena (Yorktown, N.Y.) and freshman center fielder
Rich Maccarone (Glen Cove, N.Y.) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Freshman first baseman
David Groneveld (Centereach, N.Y.) followed with an RBI single to plate Arena. After senior left fielder
Vinny Iacono (Nesconset, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch, Maccarone was able to cross the plate when Herring hit a ground ball to the shortstop.
Chenicek and Arena each finished the day 2-for-4 with a run scored, and six other Pioneers added a hit.
Martinez earned the win on the mound for LIU Post, tossing four innings while striking out two. Eckerle tossed the final five innings of play, scattering six hits while fanning seven.
The Pioneers will next head to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. on Friday, April 5 for an East Coast Conference matchup against Mercy College with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
