Softball Slips By Bears With 1-0 And 4-3 Victories

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (April 11, 2013) – The LIU Post softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep over rival neighbors New York Institute of Technology Thursday afternoon. Both games were close as the Pioneers edged the Bears by scores of 1-0 and 4-3.
LIU Post improves to 26-9 including 11-1 in East Coast Conference action, while NYIT slips to 10-20 and 5-11 in conference play.
In game one, the scoring started and ended with the first batter of the game as junior hurler
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) helped her own cause with a leadoff home run. She held the Bears scoreless as she tossed a complete game shutout, scattering five hits and one walk while striking out seven in her 13
th win of the season. Weber only allowed one runner to advance past first base over the course of the game.
Offensively, Weber finished 3-for-4, while sophomore left fielder
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) and freshman third baseman
Kelsey McLaughlin (Lido Beach, N.Y.) each added a 2-for-3 performance.
In game two, NYIT was first on the board with back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the third to take the 2-0 lead. However, the Pioneers answered back in the top of the fifth with three runs on three hits and two NYIT miscues capped off with a sacrifice fly to left field by freshman catcher
Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) that allowed junior center fielder
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) to score for the third run of the inning.
Gonzalez registered her second RBI of the game in the top of the sixth when she knocked in sophomore
Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) with a single to center field.
NYIT added a run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly to cut the Pioneer lead to one, but freshman
Quincy Lewis (Corning, N.Y.) was able to get the final Bear to line out to shortstop to secure the win. Lewis pitched the final four innings of play, earning her third win of the season. She allowed just one run on three hits and fanned two.

Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) both registered 3-for-4 showings at the plate in game two.
Next up for the Pioneers is a doubleheader at No. 19 Molloy College on Saturday, April 13 with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
