ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (April 13, 2013) – Strong pitching by the LIU Post softball team leads to a doubleheader sweep of No. 19 Molloy College, ending the Lions' 11 game win streak. The Pioneers battled the Lions to a 2-1 victory in game one, and then exploded in game two with a 9-2 win.
Extending its win streak to 12, LIU Post boosts its overall record to 28-9 and an ECC leading 13-1 in-conference record. Molloy falls to 32-8 on the season including 15-3 during conference play.
Game one proved to be a pitching battle with junior hurler
Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) outdueling Molloy's Kelly Jansen in the 2-1 victory. Weber helped her own cause with a homerun to left field in the first at-bat of the game, and junior center fielder
Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) took Jansen deep for a solo shot to center in the fourth for the game-winning run for the Pioneers.
In the third inning, Nicolette Sinagra singled in
Megan Butterworth for Molloy's only run of the game.
Weber earned her 14
th win in the circle tossing a complete game while scattering just four hits and five walks while striking out 11. Jansen took the loss falling to 14-5 on the season allowing just two runs, but they would prove to be vital as they were both solo homers. She also fanned 14.
Game two was a completely different type of game with the Pioneers scoring nine runs on 11 hits. LIU Post jumped on the board in the first inning once again when sophomore first baseman
Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) singled to center field to score
Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) and
Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.). Molloy cut the lead to one in the bottom of the inning with Butterworth scoring on a Sinagra double to right field.
With Gonzalez aboard in the top of the third, Hagenah blasted a shot over the left field fence to bring the lead to three (4-1); and an inning after Jansen came in to relieve Butterworth on the mound, Gonzalez came up in the fifth and deposited a second Jansen pitch over the left field fence with
Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.) aboard to bring the Pioneers' lead to 5.
Molloy was able to score a run in the bottom of the fifth on a passed ball, but in the top of the seventh LIU Post scored three runs with two outs to put the game away. Gonzalez scored on a passed ball, then two batters later sophomore right fielder
Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) singled up the middle with the bases loaded to score Hagenah and Dzierzynski.
Freshman reliever
Quincy Lewis (Corning, N.Y.) shut down Molloy's top of the order one-two-three in the bottom of the seventh earning her ECC-leading fifth save of the season. Sophomore
Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) earned the win in the circle brining her record to 8-1. She allowed one run on four hits and one walk while fanning two in four innings of work.
The Pioneers handed Butterworth just her third loss of the season, knocking her out after just three innings of play.
Hagenah led the Pioneers at the plate going 4-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Gonzalez, Dzierzynski, and Miller also added two RBI apiece.
The Pioneers look to extend their 12-game winning streak as they head to ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas Sunday, April 14 with play starting at noon.
