BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (April 3, 2013) – The LIU Post softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to the University of New Haven on Wednesday by scores of 6-2 and 10-5.

LIU Post falls to 16-9 on the season, while New Haven improves to 15-6.

In game one, the Pioneers pushed across two runs in the second inning.  Junior shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double off the right field fence and was able to advance to third on an error.  Two batters later freshman designated player Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) hit a sharp ground ball to the third baseman who misfired the ball home in an attempt to nab the scoring Hagenah.  Freshman second baseman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) followed with an RBI groundout to second base plating Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) who walked earlier in the inning.

That would be all the scoring LIU Post would muster as New Haven's Micah Stonesifer held the Pioneer offense scoreless over the final five innings.

The Chargers tied the game in the fifth behind a Lindsey Couturier RBI double, and Christina Gelardi scored on a Pioneer fielding miscue.  New Haven scored four more in the seventh off of five hits including a Lucy Francisco two RBI single to center field plating Jess Spivey and Couturier.

Stonesifer held the Pioneers to just three hits with two coming off the bat of Hagenah (2-for-2) and Swantek adding a hit in three trips.

Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) was saddled with the loss for LIU Post, giving up nine hits and three walks while striking out five.

In game two, the Chargers jumped out to a one run lead in the top half of the first when Spivey laid down a squeeze bunt that Gelardi was able to score on.

The Pioneers answered with two runs of their own when Dzierzynski hit a towering pop up just in front of the plate that the New Haven defense misplayed allowing both Weber and Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) to cross the plate.

Dzierzynksi was once again in the mix of things in the third inning when she blasted a three-run home run into the left field bleachers with Hagenah and Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) on base.

New Haven cut the Pioneer lead to one in the fifth when Spivey knocked a 2 RBI single through the middle.  Francisco doubled to center with Sadie Redman, who pinch ran for Spivey, crossing the plate.  The Chargers added another five runs in the sixth behind a Couturier RBI single and a Kerilynn Tricinelli grand slam to put the game out of reach.

The game was then called in the top of the seventh due to darkness.

Freshman Quincy Lewis (Corning, N.Y.) was charged with the loss, tossing five and one-third innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits and two walks while fanning four.  Havens, Szierzynski, Swantek, and Palmeri each registered a hit in game two.

The Pioneers are back in action Thursday, April 4 as they host East Coast Conference foe University of Bridgeport with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
