BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (May 11, 2013) – After scoring five runs over the first two innings, Adelphi University held the LIU Post softball team to just two runs over the course of the game to take game three of the NCAA Division II East Region by a score of 5-2.

Adelphi improves to 40-17 and advances to the championship game to be played Sunday at 3 p.m.  LIU Post slips to 47-14 and will face the winner of game four between the University of New Haven and Dominican College Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

The Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the first on two hits, one error, and three walks.  Back-to-back bases loaded walks and a sacrifice fly to left center brought the three runs across.

The Panthers added two more runs in the bottom of the second.  Right fielder Kayla Rieger was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a Pioneer miscue giving the Panthers first and second with no outs.  Left fielder Amy Caird followed with a sacrifice fly to left field plating Rieger.  Two batters later first baseman Katie Andrews knocked an RBI single to left field to conclude the Panthers' scoring on the day.

The Pioneer bats came to life in the top of the sixth, pushing across two runs on three hits and two errors.  With one out, junior pitcher Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.) reached on a throwing error by the Panthers' shortstop Jeanine Leo.  With two outs and Weber aboard, junior center fielder Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.) drilled a single up the middle to score Weber from second.  After two consecutive singles by junior shortstop Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.) and sophomore catcher Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.), freshman designated player Paige Swantek (Smithtown, N.Y.) hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop but the first baseman could not handle the throw allowing Gonzalez to score.

In the top of the seventh the Pioneers threatened after freshman third baseman Dana Moss (Howard Beach, N.Y.) led off the inning with a line drive single to left field, but two consecutive fielder's choices and a groundout ended the game.

Andrews led the Panthers at the plate going 2-for-4, and Devon Kelly recorded her 17th win in the circle on the season.

Gonzalez was the lone Pioneer to register a multi-hit game with a 2-for-3 performance.  Weber was charged with the loss tossing the first two innings of play allowing five runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks with three strikeouts.  Sophomore Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) threw three innings of relief allowing just one hit while striking out one.
