Torres' Double-Double Gives Men's Basketball 88-84 Victory at NYIT

P.J. Torres (New Rochelle, N.Y.) registered a double-double Tuesday with 24 points and 12 rebounds, as the LIU Post men's basketball team edged NYIT, 88-84, in an East Coast Conference clash at Recreation Hall in Old Westbury, N.Y.
Down 20-16 seven minutes into the first half, the Pioneers (12-4, 7-4 ECC) rolled off an 11-0 run in a stint of 3:14 to go ahead 27-20 at the 9:47 mark. Torres opened up the burst with a three, and closed it out via a jay on the fast break. Junior forward
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) added a three-point play.
The Bears (8-9, 6-5 ECC) followed up though with a 10-2 spurt to re-gain the lead (30-29). Junior guard Wayne Bradford (Ellicott City, Md.) and sophomore forward/center Nick Fessenden (Greenlawn, N.Y.) netted back-to-back lay-ups to get things going. Sophomore guard Khalif Chaplin (Hempstead, N.Y.) capped it with a jay.
Less than a minute after the hosts' run concluded, LIU Post wrapped up the stanza on a high note, recording a 10-2 response of its own to grab a 41-34 advantage with 2:27 remaining before halftime. Sophomore guard
Jared Hall (South Orange, N.J.) paced the green and gold's scoring in the stretch, pouring in four points.
The visitors would carry a 42-39 cushion into the intermission. Torres led both squads in the opening session with a 15-point effort.
At the start of the latter half, a Fessenden lay-up, and a Jahleel Felix (Flushing, N.Y.) free throw tied the contest at 42-all only 2:15 in. From there, an 8-0 burst by the green and gold in a span of 1:13 made it a 50-42 game. Junior guard

Dillon Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) knocked down a trey to end it.
LIU Post soon went ahead by as much as a 13-point margin (64-51) with 11:22 left, off a pair of free ones by sophomore guard
Akosa Maduegbunam (Hyde Park, Mass.).
But, NYIT fought back, and managed to tie the score (82-82) for the fifth time in the match at the 2:52 mark.
The Bears, however, only mustered two more points the rest of the way, while a
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) lay-up in the last minute-and-a-half sealed the victory for the Pioneers.
Allen finished with 18 points and five rebounds. Stokley compiled 16 points and nine boards. Junior forward
Charles McCann (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) added a 13-point, eight-rebound showing. Hall chipped in eight points, two boards and one steal. Burns amassed seven assists, four rebounds, three points and one steal.
