INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Nov. 16, 2014) - On Sunday, the 24-team field was released for the 2014 NCAA Division II Championship, and LIU Post received the No. 6 seed. The Pioneers will square off with third-seeded Virginia State in a first-round tilt next Saturday.
LIU Post, which captured the Northeast-10 Conference title with a 58-25 drubbing of American International on Saturday (Nov. 15), are back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005. That season, the green and gold advanced to the national quarterfinals, defeating West Chester (24-20) and Shepherd (28-21) on the way.
Saturday marks the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Pioneers enter the game at 8-3 overall, while the Trojans boast a record of 9-2. The victor of the game will travel to Bloomsburg, Pa. for a second-round clash at No. 5 Bloomsburg on Nov. 29.
Leading their respective offenses are
Steven Laurino (Boise, Idaho) and Tarian Ayres (Dillwyn, Va.). In a banner year for the Boise product, Laurino has completed 61 percent (288-of-472) of his passes for 3,305 yards and 28 touchdowns for LIU Post. He has also ran for 602 net yards and 18 scores.
Ayres has passed for 1,827 yards and 14 touchdowns for Virginia State. On the ground, Kavon Bellamy (Hampton, Va.) has carried the ball 200 times for 791 yards and 10 TD's.
