BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 23, 2014) - On Sunday, the LIU Post men's basketball team wrapped up its 2014 Thanksgiving Tournament with an 84-69 win against Concordia in a non-conference tilt at the Pratt Recreation Center.
Tied 17-17 midway through the first half, the Pioneers (3-2) went on a 9-0 run in a one-minute stint to take a 26-17 lead at the eight-minute mark. Senior forward
Charles McCann (Springfield Gardens, N.Y.) put the green and gold ahead on a converted three-point play. Sophomore forward
Greg Dotson (Abington, Pa.) capped the spurt with a lay-up.
Though Concordia (1-4) twice came as close as five points down the stretch in the opening session, LIU Post brought a double-digit advantage (45-35) into the locker room.
In the second half, a jay by McCann just 53 seconds in extended the Pioneers' lead to 47-35. However, the Clippers reeled off a 10-2 burst over a span of 2:19 to cut the deficit to 49-45 with 16:01 remaining. Sophomore guard Jalen Heath (Joliet, Ill.) accounted for six of the points in the run.
Despite the Concordia comeback attempt, LIU Post put the game away for good with an 11-2 response, which made it a 60-47 game. Junior guard
Dillon Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) drilled a shot from downtown to spark the streak.
McCann led all scorers on the day with 20 points. He was 8-of-12 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the stripe. Dotson registered his first double-double (18 points, 14 rebounds) in a Pioneer uniform. Senior guard
P.J. Torres (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and junior guard
Chris Orozco (Tenafly, N.J.) poured in 12 points apiece. The pair also pulled down eight, and seven rebounds, respectively.
Head Coach
Erik Smiles and his LIU Post squad return to the hardwood next Wednesday (Dec. 3), when they open East Coast Conference play at reigning league champion Bridgeport. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
