PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Feb. 14, 2014) - With Day One of the Metropolitan Championships in the books at Rutgers, the LIU Post women's swimming team holds a commanding lead with 454 total points. Senior Malin Hedberg (Vasteras, Sweden) had the lone Pioneer win on the day in the 500-yard freestyle.

Hedberg's time of 5:07.21 earned her squad 32 points, and was one of 10 NCAA "B" cut standard times by the green and gold. Also competing in the 500-free were freshman Poppy Hill (London, England, United Kingdom) and sophomore Kat Kazaba (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.). Hill's mark of 5:10.66 was good for third place, while Kazaba finished 10th with a clocking of 5:17.19.

During the two relay events, LIU Post notched 'B' cuts and second-place finishes. Juniors Courtney Delehanty (Oceanport, N.J.) and Johanna Pettersson (Kungalv, Sweden), along with sophomores Meghan Brazier (West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada) and Marthe Soerensen (Stavanger, Norway) set a new school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:34.61), shaving 0.28 seconds off the previous time set at last year's Metropolitan Championships.

In the 400-yard medley relay, Brazier and Pettersson teamed up with senior Tamara Garriock (Duncan, British Columbia, Canada) and sophomore Joyce Kwok (Middle Village, N.Y.) to swim a 3:44.53, which ranks second all-time in program history.

Six Pioneers registered points in the 50-yard freestyle, all finishing within the Top-14, including the second- through fifth-place slots. First to touch the wall was Delehanty with a second-place 'B' cut of 24.11. Just behind with another 'B' cut (24.21) was sophomore Seren Jones (Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom), earning bronze. The final 'B' cut time in the event belonged to the fourth-place finisher, Soerensen, posting a 24.23 clocking. She barely edged out Brazier, who reached the pad just four-hundredths of a second later at 24.27.

Next to place was senior Angelica Norrena (Solna, Sweden) with the eighth-best time of 24.58. Junior Maxi Russo (Lake Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) rounded out the Pioneer finishers in 14th place (25.51).

The final event with multiple Pioneers bringing in Top-10 finishes was the 200-yard individual medley. The first four grabbed 'B' cut times and consecutively reached the wall in second- through fifth-place. Garriock led the way, taking home silver with her mark of 2:02.97, while Pettersson was close behind, grabbing bronze. Pettersson topped her already second-best time in school history with 2:03.39. In fourth and fifth place, respectively, were Kwok and junior Carolin Rademacher (Isernhagen, Germany).  Kwok swam a 2:05.23, while Rademacher lowered her fourth-best Pioneer time to 2:05.33. Senior Chelcee Hew (Savage, Minn.) was ninth with a time of 2:10.48.

Day Two will feature the 200-yard medley relay, 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, and 800-yard freestyle relay. Keep track of events in real time by clicking here.
