Hot Shooting Sends Men's Basketball to 93-67 Win at Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 19, 2014) - The LIU Post men's basketball team shot an impressive 55.0 percent from the floor Wednesday, en route to a 93-67 triumph over Mercy in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. Senior forward
Vaughn Allen (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) anchored the Pioneers' offense with a 21-point effort.
Holding a slim 6-4 edge nearly five minutes in, the green and gold put the game away early with a 22-2 run over an eight-minute spurt to grab a 28-6 lead at the 7:03 mark. Allen netted six of the first 11 points, including a dunk to spark it. Sophomore guard
Chris Orozco (Tenafly, N.J.) closed the streak out with a trifecta.
LIU Post (15-10, 10-7 ECC), thanks to a pair of Orozco free throws in the final seconds, went into the intermission up 42-20. The Pioneers got 16 of their points off the bench in the session, and were a perfect 14-of-14 at the line. They were also 13-for-23 (56.5 percent) from the field.
In the latter period, the visitors quickly widened their lead to more than 30 points. Five-and-a-half minutes into the half, a three-ball by sophomore guard
Dillon Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) made it a 58-27 contest. LIU Post opened up as much as a 37-point cushion (70-33) at the halfway mark.
Allen, who was 8-of-11 from field-goal range, amassed seven rebounds and four assists, in addition to his 21-point showing. Junior guard
P.J. Torres (New Rochelle, N.Y.) scored 16 points in 23 minutes off the bench. Junior forward
Tyuan Williams (Newark, N.J.) collected 15 points and five boards. Junior guard
Isiah Stokley (Queens, N.Y.) and Burns poured in 11 points apiece. Stokley grabbed seven rebounds as well, while Burns dished off five assists and swiped four steals.

Erik Smiles and the Pioneers are back to the hardwood Saturday (Feb. 22) against East Coast Conference nemesis St. Thomas Aquinas at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
