Five-Run Ninth Sinks Baseball Versus Bentley
Box Score
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Mar. 22, 2014) - The LIU Post baseball team suffered its third-consecutive defeat Saturday, falling 5-0 to Bentley at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville, N.Y.
The Pioneers (4-5) couldn't muster any runs against Bentley's Ryan O'Connor, who pitched a complete-game shutout, and limited the green and gold to just five hits.
LIU Post got a very impressive start from freshman hurler
Jake DeCarli (Higganum, Conn.). He tossed six perfect innings in his second collegiate start. Things got interesting in the seventh, as DeCarli gave up his first hit of the afternoon. The Higganum, Conn. native struck out the next batter, but Burton Deady was able to reach on a wild pitch. With two on, Will Brennan drew a walk to load the bases. That prompted the Pioneers to make a pitching change with freshman
James Long (Oceanside, N.Y.) getting the call out of the bullpen.
Long struck out the first batter he faced. The next Falcon to the plate, Mike Muir, lined a shot to short where
Angel Vidal (Sheepshead Bay, N.Y.) climbed the ladder to make a play. Vidal knocked the ball down, recovered and threw home to force the runner out at the plate. Long got out of the bases-loaded jam after Nate Witkowski grounded into a fielder's choice.
For the second-straight game, the Falcons pushed the go-ahead run across in the ninth, this time plating five. Back-to-back two-run knocks by Muir and Witkowski, capped by a run-scoring fielder's choice gave the Falcons a 5-0 cushion.
The Pioneers return to action on Sunday (Mar. 23) when they host Stonehill in a non-conference doubleheader at the LIU Post Baseball Field in Brookville, N.Y. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
