ITHACA, N.Y. (Nov. 22, 2015) - The LIU Post wrestling team took to the mat Sunday at the 2015 New York State Intercollegiate Championships, hosted by Cornell University.
Freshman
Monair McDonald (Roosevelt, N.Y.) boasted the highest finish of the tournament for the Pioneers. He pinned New York University's Jackson Wilson in 3:13 and earned a 6-4 decision over Army's Peter Strassfield, en route to a fourth-place showing in the heavyweight bracket.
Sophomore
Joe Calderone (Huntington Station, N.Y.) placed fifth at the 133-lb. weight class. He won his first two bouts decisively against Brockport State's Eric Valez (16-0) and NYU's Nathan Pike (7-2), before pinning Hunter College's Jaydon Rice two minutes into the opening period in the fifth-place match.
Freshman
T.J. Fabian (Wading River, N.Y.) finished sixth at 141 lbs. After pinning NYU's Anthony Calvano in 35 seconds in his first match of the day, Fabian lost 6-3 to Cornell's William Koll, moving him into the wrestlebacks.
In the consolation bracket, Fabian earned his second win via pinfall of the day, but eventually lost 10-4 to Buffalo's Brandon Lapi in the fifth-place bout.
Freshman
Logan McGinn (Medford, N.Y.) was seventh at 184 lbs., while sophomore
Ed Ramirez, Jr. (Massapequa, N.Y.) placed eighth at 165. McGinn majored USMA Prep's Jon Schmissrauter (11-2) and shut out Hunter's Alexis Garcia (7-0) to reach the seventh-place match, where he won a 2-1 tie-breaker over Ithaca College's Liam Korbul.
Despite losing his opening bout, Ramirez, Jr. won three consecutive matches in the wrestlebacks, including back-to-back wins via pinfall versus USMMA's Mike Maye (4:30) and Niagara Community College's Kaydon Newton (4:38). He also majored RIT's John Donohue by a 15-7 count.
Head Coach
Joe Patrovich and his LIU Post squad return to action next Sunday (Nov. 29) at Madison Square Garden against Wilkes University, as part of Grapple at the Garden. The dual is set to get underway from "The World's Most Famous Arena" at 10 a.m.
