WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (Nov. 7, 2015) - Junior
Vinny Turano (Wantagh, N.Y.) captured the 141-lb. title Saturday, as the LIU Post wrestling team opened the 2015-16 campaign with a seventh-place finish at the Monarch Invitational at McGrane Gymnasium.
Turano won his first two decisions via technical fall (18-0; 15-0), before majoring Wilkes University's Thomas Stokes, 11-2, to advance to the semifinals. He followed that up with a close 6-4 victory over Wilkes' Pankil Chander and a 13-7 win versus York College of Pennsylvania's Gregory Warner to take the bracket.
Sophomore
Jake Horton (Medford, N.Y.) placed third at the 197-lb. weight class. He opened tournament play by majoring (14-4) Scranton University's Derek Fisher and claiming a 3-1 win against York's John Shorter. Then, in the wrestlebacks, Horton pulled out a slight 3-2 victory over Oneonta State University's Peter Pjetri for a third-place finish.
Sophomore
Matt Langan (Wantagh, N.Y.) came in fourth at 149. He won four straight decisions, including the wrestlebacks, and majored Wilkes' Cory Fleming, 17-8, to advance to the third-place match.
In their first collegiate appearances, freshmen
Joe Paterno (Kings Park, N.Y.) and
Dan Arkow (Merrick, N.Y.) earned two wins apiece in the consolation bracket at 125 and 174 lbs., respectively.
Paterno picked up back-to-back pinfalls of Ferrum's Brett Binnix and Scranton's Jake Thomson in the wrestlebacks, while Arkow also pinned one of his opponents, Scranton's Kevin Merle in 2:39.

Joe Patrovich and the Pioneers return to the mat on Wednesday (Nov. 11), when they square off with Shippensburg University and York (Pa.) in a tri-match at 4 p.m. in Shippensburg.
