Women's Basketball's Late Rally Falls Short in 61-54 Loss to Bentley

Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Dec. 20, 2015) - Despite a 13-point effort from junior forward Janaysia James (Perth Amboy, N.J.), the LIU Post women's basketball team fell to Bentley University, 61-54, in non-conference action at the Pratt Recreation Center on Sunday.

The loss brings the Pioneers to 1-9 overall, while Bentley improves to 9-2 on the year.

In what was an up-and-down contest, the Pioneers hung around for most of the game, trailing by just two points at halftime (32-30). 

The Falcons would lead by as many as 11 points in the first quarter, after Jen Gemma hit a three with 4:37 to go before the first intermission.

In the second quarter, the Pioneers fought back, opening the quarter on a 7-1 run to make it a 19-17 game with just over seven minutes left in the first half. Bentley then responded with an 8-2 run to make it 27-19 midway through the period.

In the final minute-plus, the green and gold trailed 32-25, until the Pioneers rattled off five straight points off a three-ball from James and a jumper from seinor guard Jalyn Brown (Riverhead, N.Y.) to make it a 32-30 game at halftime.

In the third, Bentley led by as many as seven points on three different occasions, but the Pioneers never gave up. Down 47-40 with under a minute to go, freshman guard Amber Jones (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a lay-up, before James drained another trey to make it a 47-45 game entering the final quarter.

James opened the fourth period with a deep three, giving the Pioneers their first lead of the contest (48-47), but Bentley answered wtih a fast-break lay-up to make it 49-48, a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Freshman guard Naya Williams (New Rochelle, N.Y.) added 11 points in 29 minutes off the bench. The freshman shot 4-of-7 from the floor and was 3-for-6 from the free-throw line. Brown and senior guard Khea Gibbs (Norwalk, Conn.) had six points apiece.

Head Coach Deirdre Moore and the Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 30, when they host Assumption College in a non-conference game in Brookville. The opening tip is slated for 3 p.m.
