NEWBERRY, S.C. (Dec. 30, 2015) - The LIU Post wrestling team has moved to seventh in the latest D2Wrestle.com Super Region I rankings for 2015-16, released Wednesday night.
In the month of December, the Pioneers boasted a dual record of 4-2 to improve to 5-6 overall. Three of those victories came in a sweep of their opposition at the Mariner Duals, hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy on Dec. 12.
LIU Post also had 11 of its grapplers place in the Top-5 at the Dragon Open on Dec. 5. Sophomore
Joe Calderone (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and junior
Vinny Turano (Wantagh, N.Y.) came in second at the respective 133- and 141-lb. weight classes. Sophomores
Matt Langan (Wantagh, N.Y.) and
Ronnie King (Islip, N.Y.) were both third at 149 and 184, respectively.
In the 133-lb. rankings, Calderone topped the list. After opening the year at 3-5, he has won 10 of his last 11 bouts, including an 8-2 mark in December. During this current stretch, Calderone has won four of his matches via decision, three via pinfall, two via technical fall and one via major decision.
King, who is currently riding a six-match winning streak, placed sixth at 184 lbs. Since the start of the 2015-16 campaign, seven of King's victories have been decided by four points or less.
Sophomores
James Louison (Hauppauge, N.Y.) and
Matt Langan (Wantagh, N.Y.) individually ranked fifth and sixth at heavyweight and 149 lbs. Louison stands at 7-3 on the season, while Langan boasts a ledger of 16-9. Additionally, Langan has won seven of his previous 10 bouts, six of which via decision.
