BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Sept. 12, 2015) - The 15th-ranked LIU Post men's soccer team held Assumption College to just two shots in 90 minutes Saturday, as the Pioneers turned aside the Greyhounds, 2-1, at the Purple Knight Classic at Knights' Field.
LIU Post (2-1-1) bounced back from a 2-1 loss to Merrimack College on Thursday by keeping the Assumption (0-4) offense at bay after allowing an early goal.
In the 20th minute, Assumption's Zack Scafati (Franklin, Mass.) put a shot just inside the far post off a corner kick, giving the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead.
Then, in the 35th minute, senior midfielder
Matias Ruiz (Southampton, N.Y.) received a cross at the top of the box from fellow senior midfielder
Per Forgaard (Stavanger, Norway). Ruiz then found the top-left corner of the mesh to tie the contest at 1-1.
In the second half, freshman midfielder
Charlie Ledula (London, England) got a pass from junior forward
Johann Kristjansson (Reykjavic, Iceland) and sent a volley into the back of the net for the eventual game-winning tally.
The Pioneers dominated on the offensive end, outshooting the Greyhounds, 23-2. They also earned nine corner kicks to Assumption's two.
