MANSFIELD, Mass. (Sept. 8, 2015) - After leading the LIU Post football team to a season-opening 41-40 win at East Stroudsburg on Thursday, junior quarterback
Jeff Kidd (Salem, Ore.) and red-shirt freshman running back
Malik Pierre (Holbrook, N.Y.) were named the Northeast-10 Conference Offensive Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, on Monday.
Both players made an impact in their first game as Pioneers. Kidd threw for 381 yards, while completing 64.4 percent of his passes (29-for-45) and three touchdowns. Pierre racked up a total of 330 all-purpose yards (117 rushing, 213 kick return).
Behind Kidd's strong arm, the Pioneers erased a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter, as he connected with red-shirt sophomore wide receiver
Kyle Ward (Elizabeth, N.J.) on a 54-yard touchdown pass to make it a one-score game with 6:36 to go. Then, after a defensive stop, Kidd found red-shirt junior wideout
Shane Hubbard (St. Albans, N.Y.) down the sideline. Hubbard broke free and dove into the end zone for the eventual game-winning touchdown.
Pierre's breakout night featured a 47-yard run that set up the green and gold's first touchdown of the season. In all, his rushing total was the most in a Pioneer season opener since
Erik Anderwkavich (Queens, N.Y.) ran for 133 against American International College in 2010. His 330 all-purpose yards are the most since LIU Post Football Hall of Famer Ian Smart's 363 against University of Massachusetts - Lowell in 2002.
Kidd, Pierre and the rest of the Pioneers are back in action on Saturday (Sept. 12), when they host Assumption in their 2015 home and NE-10 opener at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium in Brookville, N.Y. Kickoff is set for noon.
