OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Jan. 12, 2016) - On Tuesday, the LIU Post men's basketball team eclipsed the century mark in a 105-70 victory over East Coast Conference foe New York Institute of Technology in the opening installment of the 2015-16 Battle of the Boulevard at Recreation Hall.
Senior guard
Dillon Burns (Staten Island, N.Y.) went off for a career-high 23 points in the win. He shot 8-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. Burns also dished out eight assists and swiped four steals in 29 minutes of action. Junior forward
Greg Dotson (Abington, Pa.), like Burns, was 8-of-11 shooting, en route to scoring 19 points. He crashed the glass for seven rebounds, as well. Fellow junior forward
Barrington Alston (Wilmington, Del.) provided 16 points, nine rebounds and two blocks off the bench.
Holding a slight 20-17 edge with just under 13 minutes to go in the opening half, the Pioneers (12-3, 7-0 ECC) used a 21-9 run in a six-plus minute stretch to jump out to a commanding 41-26 lead at the 5:54 mark. Dotson put down a dunk to get it started. Burns wrapped up the streak with consecutive three-pointers. Additionally, red-shirt sophomore guard
Aary Bibens (Bennington, Vt.) buried a trey in the effort, while junior guard
Jared Hall (South Orange, N.J.), who amassed 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists on the night, added a pair of freebies and a lay-up.
LIU Post eventually brought a 14-point cushion (51-37) into the break, and never let its foot off the gas pedal in the latter 20-minute session.
Though NYIT (1-13, 0-7 ECC) knocked down the opening bucket of the half, the Pioneers answered with a quick 8-0 spurt in 1:53 to put the decision out of reach. Senior forward
Michael Phillip (Brooklyn, N.Y.) bookended the run with baskets to make it a 59-39 game. The green and gold later built as large as a 38-point advantage (92-54) on a
Bryant Webb (Parlin, N.J.) trifecta at the 5:11 mark.
For the second time in the last three contests, LIU Post made more than half of its field-goal attempts, boasting a .514 (38-of-74) clip. It also shot 41.7 percent (10-of-24) from long distance and 79.2 percent (19-of-24) from the foul line. Senior guard
Devon McMillan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipped in seven rebounds, six points and four assists. Webb added eight points and two steals. Sophomore forward
Hunter Powell (Tustin, Mich.) racked up five points, five boards and one assist.
Head Coach
Erik Smiles and the Pioneers now return home to face Daemen College in an ECC tilt on Friday (Jan. 15), in the first of a back-to-back set at the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
