GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Sept. 1, 2016) - On Thursday, the ninth-ranked LIU Post men's soccer team used a pair of late goals to come back and beat Adelphi University, 2-1, in its 2016 season opener at the Adelphi Alumni Invitational at Motamed Field in Garden City.

The Pioneers (1-0) and Panthers (0-1) played a tightly-contested first half, but neither team found the back of the net in the opening 45 minutes.

In the 68th minute, Adelphi used some quick passing to beat senior keeper Jesper Malmstrom (Linkopping, Sweden) to take a 1-0 lead.

After a stoppage due to an injury in the 76th minute, the Pioneers turned up the pressure offensively.

A minute later, junior midfielder Harry Pearse (Berkshire, London, England) bent a free kick under the bar and inside the far post to tie the game at 1-all.

Later, in the 83rd minute, after an Adelphi corner kick, sophomore forward Charlie Ledula (London, England) found space and eventually beat three defenders inside the box, but his shot was stopped by Spenser Powell, preserving the 1-1 tie.

Then, in the 88th minute, the ball was played into the box, where senior forward Jason Lampkin (Hawardon, North Wales, U.K.) beat Powell to the spot and sent a cross to Ledula in the middle of the penalty area. Ledula sent the shot into the open net, giving the Pioneers a 2-1 advantage.

In the 89th minute, Adelphi had an opportunity to tie it after a loose ball in the box found the head of Caelen Hueber, but the shot went wide.

Malmstrom made one save in his 90 minutes of action. The Pioneers held a 10-7 advantage in shots, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal and won eight corners to Adelphi's four.

Head Coach Andreas Lindberg and the Pioneers return to the pitch on Saturday (Sept. 3), when they play their final contest of the Adelphi Alumni Invitational. LIU Post will square off with Southern Connecticut State University at 4 p.m. in Garden City.
