WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The chilly Connecticut breeze cooled off the bats of the LIU Post softball team after an offensive explosion a day ago, as the Pioneers dropped both ends of a doubleheader against the University of New Haven, 1-0 and 2-1 March 18.
Six different Pioneers recorded a single hit on the day, as LIU Post recorded just four hits in the day's opening contest before tallying two hits in game two. In the circle, junior
Hannah Olshevski and sophomore
Katie Humhej were both solid, allowing a combined three runs on the day, though the effort was not enough.
Game One – New Haven 1, LIU Post 0
New Haven plated one run in the bottom of the second when
Alexandria Cunkle singled home
Kristine Liptack to give the Chargers a 1-0 advantage. Olshevski was solid the rest of the way, however, stranding six batters from that point.
Sophomore
Abbey Fortin extender her hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the top of the fourth, but was stranded on third. In the fifth, the Pioneers put runners on second and third with nobody out, but sophomore
Megan Sneeden was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a ground ball to third and the Pioneers stranded another runner on third in what proved to be the final threat in game one.
Game Two – New Haven 2, LIU Post 1
The Pioneers threatened often with the leadoff batter reaching base in each of the first three innings, but only plated one run in the top of the third inning on a wild pitch, stranding three runners on base through the first three frames.
Following a scoreless inning in the bottom of the third, New Haven responded with two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out, two-run single by
Katrina Aponte to take a 2-1 lead. The Pioneers had a runner in scoring position in the top of the sixth but could not bring in the tying run, falling by the 2-1 final.
The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday, March 20 when they host Post University at 1:00 p.m.
