ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (April 19, 2008) - Thomas Maloney
scored four goals and Greg Cerar tallied three goals and three assists as the No. 5 Pioneers outlasted the Molloy College Lions to earn a hard-fought, 13-12 victory in East Coast Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.
The win improves the Pioneers to 9-3, and 2-2 in the East Coast Conference, while Molloy drops to 4-8 and 0-5 in ECC play.
The Pioneers scored the first four goals of the game to jump out to a 4-0 lead, before the Lions came back with two to cut the lead in half. Cerar scored his first goal of the day to push the lead to 5-2, but two straight Lions goals gave the Pioneers just a one goal edge. A Chris Mills goal gave the Lions a 5-5 tie, and a Vinny Galasso goal gave them a 6-5 edge, but Rob Renetta tied the score just a minute later with an unassisted goal.
The two teams traded goals and headed into the half tied at 7-7. At the start of the third period, the Lions continued to trade goals with the Pioneers, with one team pulling ahead and the other tying the game back up.
C.W. Post had a 12-10 lead with 13:03 remaining in the half, but goals by Keith Galante at 12:11 and Mike Salisbury at 6:28 gave the Lions another tie, 12-12.
Matt Dimler's unassisted goal with 1:12 remaining proved to be the game winner as the Pioneers held on for a 13-12 victory.
Renetta ended the day with 2 goals and three assists, while Dimler added two goals and an assist.
Freshman goalie Mike Giordano made eight saves in the net, earning the win for the Pioneers.
C.W. Post returns to action on April 26, as they host Dowling College for a noon ECC match-up on Hickox Field.
